Winter Photos: Five-Sense Point of View
I grew up in a house settled back in the woods. We were off the beaten path, or as some would say, out in the “boondocks.” I loved living in that house during the winter months. I loved that it had two fireplaces and a woodburning stove. Sunday mornings I would wake to the sound of my father chopping wood for the fireplaces and the winter wind whistling through the trees. I loved the way the whole house smelled of chili as it simmered on the stove all day just waiting for us to come in from sledding down the front hill.
Even now, at 31 years of age, I can close my eyes and be transported instantly to the winters of my childhood. There are even days that I wake up and wish for nothing more than to look out of my childhood window at a forest of snow-covered trees. This winter I challenge you to look at the season as more than holiday parties and family traditions. I challenge you to capture the season on film from the point of view of the five senses, the senses that capture forever in your memory the full picture of the season. Here are some ideas to get you started…
Sight:
- The first snowflakes falling on the grass
- Your windshield covered in the first frost
- Ice-covered limbs on your favorite tree
- The glow of the lights from the windows of your home (stand outside to capture this one)
- Steam rising from a mug of hot cocoa
- Your family dressed in their cold-weather gear
- Snow boots lined up by the door
- Mittens drying on the furnace registers
- Snowmen in the yard
Sound:
- The covers of your favorite holiday CD’s
- Bell ringers in front of your favorite stores
- The man in your life chopping wood
- Children singing in a holiday program
- Carolers on a street corner
- Jingle bells hanging on a doorknob
Taste:
- Eggnog cooking on the stove
- Holiday cookies and pies baking
- Turkey or ham roasting in the oven
- Chocolate being shaved onto a cup of hot cocoa
The first bite of a favorite holiday treat
- Your hands cupping a steaming bowl of chili
- Birds enjoying some winter seed
Smell:
- Holiday candles burning bright
- Fresh cut evergreen
- Cookies baking in the oven
- The smoke from a chimney
- Chili cooking on the stove
- Cinnamon sticks
Touch:
A stack of your favorite woolen sweaters
- Fuzzy slippers on your feet
- Cold hands warming near a fire
- A snowflake kissing your tongue
- Your hands forming a snowball
Through our senses the true essence of the season can truly be captured for years to come.
