Winter Sketch

by Nora Noll (Jan 10, 2013)

I have been scrapping for about ten years and scrapbook sketches have been an integral part of my process. I don't have much time to scrap so when I have a few moments at work, I doodle sketches. I usually print my photos in 4" by 6" format and since the trend seems to be smaller photos at this time, I often have a hard time finding inspiration for my size of pictures. I decided to create a sketch for you to use this month that utilizes this 4" by 6" photo size and also show you how I adapted my sketch to be used for two cards.

For my first layout, I chose to get into the spirit of winter and used some snow day photos. As I always do, I used the sketch more as a template and changed a few elements along the way. I enlarged one of the papers layered behind the left photo and used a die cut for the layer of paper behind the right photo. I also chose to do journaling in the lower left-hand corner, though I didn't indicate any place for journaling on the sketch. I also punched snowflakes for an added element the upper left. I covered them in Stickles, which jazz up any page.

I then flipped the sketch 90° to the right for my second layout. Flipping sketches is a great way to use the same sketch in multiple layouts without the pages looking too similar.

For this page, instead of a long piece of patterned paper layered behind the photos on the left, I chose to insert a series of different borders that overlap each other. I also used some Walnut Ink Spray Mist across the page as a unifying element. I kept the cluster but chose to add a journaling box in the left-hand corner and I changed where the title would go in the flipped sketch.

For my holiday card I only used part of the sketch as inspiration. I often do this for cards rather then use the whole sketch. I hone in on a small piece and use this for my smaller canvas. I really liked how the tag extended from the cluster in the sketch, though I chose to make a ribbon poinsettia and paper leaves instead of an actual cluster. I also layered the library card in back over the patterned paper.

For my last creation, the cluster of three circles inspired my birthday card. I wanted to use the circle label so using this part of the sketch was a no brainer. I also added a die cut edge to make it different in design from the first card.

I challenge you to use this sketch this month to create a layout or a card. Have fun with it and use it as a starting off point. You can always change an element or be inspired by just a piece of it and go from there. Who knows where it will take you!!
