Embellishing with Snowmen

by Rachel Myerson (Jan 20, 2012)

Most of us associate a picture of a snowman with winter, snow days, and children playing in the snow. Anyone who lives in a cold climate has memories of making a snowman: planning it out just so and then perhaps making something entirely different. Snowmen are very photogenic too. They just stand there and smile, until they start to melt. In scrapbooking, snowmen are a great embellishment for winter layouts, whether or not the photos depict an actual snowman. Here are some suggestions for embellishing with snowmen.

One simple way to embellish your snowman and winter layouts is with snowman stickers. Many winter collections include at least one snowman sticker.  In this layout about an unseasonable snowman, I used a snowman sticker in the opposite corner from the bat to emphasize the contradictory situation and to match the snowy color scheme of the photos.

There are many lines in songs about snowmen that we know by heart. Many of these are printed on stickers or patterned paper and make a great embellishment, such as the sticker strip which reads, "He was made of snow but the children know how he came to life one day."  If you can't find the right sticker or paper with a snowman phrase, you can always make your own using your printer or mini alphabets.

Snowmen are depicted in many winter-themed patterned papers. Use a snowman-themed paper as a background. Consider cutting out a snowman for use as an additional embellishment.

Stamps are another way to create an easy snowman embellishment. Many winter-themed stamp sets include a snowman image.

If you enjoy paper piecing, a snowman is probably the easiest image to make. Punch or die-cut three circles and stack them up as you would a real snowman. Embellish with brads and jewels, and maybe a carrot sticker for the nose (if you have one).

Of course, snowman embellishments aren't just for snowman layouts. They can be used for layouts about a variety of winter, snow, and Christmas themes. Likewise, other types of winter embellishments, such as snowflakes, can be used on layouts featuring snowmen.

For most of us, snowmen are happy images, bringing back the joy of a childhood snow day. As you use snowmen to embellish your scrapbook layouts, try to remember this joy and have fun.
