Vacation Memories
Vacations. We all take them, either as a family, a couple or alone, and we usually have more photos and memorabilia from the trip than we know what to do with. With a little planning and organizing, we can easily preserve our vacation memories.
Before You Leave:
- Buy extra rolls of film and batteries.
- Make a list of must-have photos.
- Pack a notebook to jot down information about places, activities and dates.
- Pack a folder or plastic bag and a piece of cardboard to protect memorabilia gathered during the vacation.
- Buy a disposable camera for the kids to take photos of their own.
During the Trip:
- Buy postcards. They are a great way to make sure you get good photos of sights.
- Make sure that the photographer is in at least a few of the photos.
- Collect brochures and pamphlets of special attractions.
- Save receipts and ticket stubs, as they are a great way to remember dates. Even if you don’t add these items to your album, you’ll be able to gather information from them while you’re organizing your album and journaling about your vacation.
- Use your journal. At the end of every day (or while you’re waiting for your lunch to arrive at a restaurant), jot down an outline of what you did and saw during the day.
- Don't forget to record the lighter moments in your journal as well!
- If you are traveling to a different country, hold on to a few samples of foreign currency.
When You Get Home:
Even if you don’t plan to start your album or vacation layouts right away, doing some of the following steps will help you record the details of the trip while it’s still fresh in your memory. Organizing and planning the pages ahead of time will allow you to scrapbook those whenever you’re ready, without forgetting the important information that you’d like to include.
- Have undeveloped film processed. Digital photographers can sort through photos and organize them into folders by date or place.
- Decide which photos will be featured in your album and toss or store the rest. Choose a variety of photographs that display important things you saw or did, as well as photos that show you enjoying your vacation. If you have several photos that look alike, choose the best of the group rather than including all of them.
- Determine whether your vacation layouts will go into your regular album or if they will have an album of their own. The number of photos you’ve chosen to feature might help you decide which option is better suited for preserving the vacation.
- Organize your photos into “layouts.” If you’re adding layouts to your regular album, you might want to organize the photos by place or event. If you’re creating an entire album, chronological order might be a better way to let the photos correspond to your journaling.
- Fill in the details that are missing in your journal. A long car ride or flight home is the perfect time to reflect on the trip and write down your experiences. Write a day-by-day description of what you did and saw, where you went, and what stood out to you, using your outline and jotted notes as a guide. Once your journal entries are complete, it will be easy to add the text to your layouts and have a detailed description of your trip included in your album.
- Include memorabilia. If you collected quite a bit of memorabilia, consider making a mini album exclusively for those items, or include the items within the pages of your album.
Once you’ve gotten your photos, journaling and memorabilia organized, creating the album and layouts will be a breeze. The best part is it lets you enjoy your vacation long after it’s over. Sometimes working on a vacation layout is a great way to relax all over again!
