Pick Five, Feel Creatively Alive: Scrapbooking Various Travel Photos
by Amy Sotolongo
(Oct 4, 2012)
Some days I feel overwhelmed by all the scrapbooking products that are piled on top of my scrapbooking countertop. I find myself sifting through them instead of spending my time scrapbooking. In the end I have nothing to show for my sifting other than a bigger mess than when I started. So I recently decided to start challenging myself. Grab some photos, grab a collection or stack of patterned paper and some cardstock, and then only use three more items, for a total of five. For this installment of "Pick Five, Feel Creatively Alive" I pulled out travel photos and I chose to use:
Layout #1: A Morning with Julia
This layout went together quickly. I used white cardstock as my base and then added the My Mind's Eye patterned paper with ½" cut off each side. I like to frame my layouts. I then cut the kitchen utensils with my Silhouette Cameo. Next, I added the border across the top. (This collection has an entire front side of one of the patterned papers with great borders to use.) I cut my title and added the layered sticker to the left side of the border, and then added my title. Next, I added the kitchen utensils and tied twine across the top of them. I then added another border underneath the kitchen utensils. I added the date sticker and three brads (also part of the collection). I took white cardstock and adhered my photos to it and cut it down to fit under the borders and utensils. I then added the brad with the banner and the three brads on the lower right. I love using the brads as little final touches, and they also form a visual triangle. Last, I added my journaling, which is the most important to me. I want to be able to remember this in the years to come. If you don't journal on your layouts, consider journaling on the back. You will want to remember the details that so easily become foggy in the future. This layout is about visiting Julia Child's kitchen in the Smithsonian located in Washington D.C. It was quite amazing with everything the exact same as it was when it was in her home. I loved seeing her pots, pans, cupboards, canisters and tools. I love to bake, so this was a real treat for me. Layout #2: Remember This
This summer we had the opportunity to tour around Amsterdam and visit the Anne Frank House. This is a place I think everyone should see. It is so well-preserved and has been put together in the most amazing way. There are quotes from her diary on the walls and interviews playing on various flat screens throughout. The story is told in such a way that it draws you in and grieves your heart. It was completely silent even though there was quite a crowd inside. This house leaves you speechless. It is bigger than I envisioned, but thinking about being inside for over two years was very difficult. You are not allowed to take photos inside the museum, so I bought quite the collection in the bookstore. These are some of my favorites, of Anne Frank before everything changed and Nazi Germany invaded. To make this layout I stayed with my same choices of products. I wanted the main focus to be on the photo so I left quite a bit of room to the left of the title and photo. I again framed my layout, this time with brown cardstock. I then cut my patterned paper to fit alongside the photo and added the title "remember" and the "this" along the bottom of the postcard. I then added the flower brad. Next, I added some borders and twine and then a strip of cardstock to journal on. I kept the layout simple as I wanted to highlight the photo and not any particular technique. Layout #3: Hello Mr. President I used the same set of materials to create this layout:
I wanted to be able to use four photos so I cropped and adhered them to a piece of kraft cardstock. I used the grid patterned paper for the background (frame) of the layout and then added the chevron print on top of it. Next, I cut "hello" and the speech bubble on my Silhouette. I also cut the "Mr. President" as well. I adhered the photo block first and then added the speech bubble and the rest of the title. Finally, I added the stickers, buttons, brads and banner. This is on the simpler side, but allowed me to have four photos. Your Challenge: Grab a collection or patterned paper stack, some cardstock and then three more items. Sift quickly through your photos until you find the ones you want to scrapbook with. Next, the fun begins; limit yourself to just those items and see what you can come up with. Enjoy!
