Time Capsule Scrapbook Pages

by Lindsay Teague (Jul 12, 2005)

Isn’t it entertaining to think back on the trends and fads in life that were once “all the rage?” It’s become quite a phenomenon to remind ourselves about some of the lengths we used to go to in order to have a certain hair style or wear a certain brand of clothing. I prefer not to remind myself that I confidently sported a Hypercolor T-shirt and a spiral perm at one point in my life, but it’s good for a laugh.

Do you ever wonder what we’ll be saying in 15 years about the trends and fashions of today? Make sure you take the time to record the “what’s hot & what’s not” of each year for your scrapbook. This will serve as a way to give your reader a real sense of the time and environment you were living in and will give them a way to relate to you.

Here are a few fun ideas for you to try for your next time capsule page:

  • Make a list of the top 10 internet searches for the year by finding it online, using a search engine. You can print out the short descriptions of the sites and use it as ephemera for your page.

  • Create a list of all your current favorite things. Include television, movies, hair styles, clothing brands, shoes, accessories, music, home décor items, places to shop, restaurants, foods, color combinations, sports, vacation spots, celebrities, etc.

  • Try making a list of things that happened throughout the year, by date. There are plenty of places you can search online for different events that happened in any given year.

  • Have the whole family take part in the fun by creating their own favorites list to save as blackmail when they grow up and get married.

  • Try creating a list of pop-culture word associations. Record a short thought or word about different icons in the current media. For example, if I said Martha Stewart, you might have a completely different thought today than you did five years ago. Do associations for everything from sushi to cell phones.

  • Do a question and answer with the people in your family about what they think the future will be like and what they will think about their lives today.

  • Why not actually create a time capsule? Make a small scrapbook about the things that are important to you. Include it and other items your family chooses in your time capsule container. Bury it to be dug up at a later date. (Be sure to make a map to remember where you buried it.)

I hope this will spark some imagination about the kinds of things you don’t want to leave out of your scrapbook. Taking note of your environment can be a very powerful tool in relating a time and place to your photos. Have fun and be creative!
