A Slice of Life
What is a typical day in your life? Do you have a daily routine? What do you do on a typical Saturday? While these may seem like silly things to create a layout about, future generations might really be interested in learning what a typical day in your life was like back in 2005.
There are several ways you can capture daily life in your scrapbooks.
A Day in the Life: Pick a day of the week; take photos and journal throughout the day about the ordinary things that you do. Record the time you do each daily activity. You can even include a copy of a calendar or daily planner page on your layout. Some examples of daily life include:
- what time you get up in the morning
- eating meals
- getting ready for school or work
- doing laundry
- cleaning the house
- grocery shopping
- running errands
- gardening
- bath time
- cooking dinner
- attending sporting practice or events
- doing homework
- bed time
A Moment in Time: Select a single everyday moment and create a layout about that activity. Take lots of photos capturing all the aspects of this everyday moment. Remember to journal your feelings about this particular activity.
A Day to Remember: During a recent visit with my parents, I took the opportunity to record one of the typical days that we spend with my Mom and Dad, taking advantage of all that New York City has to offer. In my journaling, I noted each step in our day, including a visit to the Rockefeller Center and The American Girl Doll Store, and recorded the time each activity took place.
A Fact of Life: Make a layout that includes a fun tidbit about one of your daily activities, such as a typical grocery list for your family. You can include a copy of your actual grocery list or a copy of a receipt from the store. You can even narrow it down to one particular item on your grocery list. For example, you can create a layout about how much milk your family drinks in a typical week. You can include the current price of a gallon of milk. Maybe each member of the family drinks a different type of milk. The possibilities are endless.
So, the next time you are looking for ways to tell the story of your life remember to include the everyday moments. I think Robert Brault said it best when he said "Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things."
