Perpetual Calendars

by Tiffany Roberts (Feb 21, 2008)

I have two fun project ideas I would like to share with you. These perpetual calendars are both creative and dynamic. Since the dates are not labeled with specific days you can create one for yourself and use it year after year.

Perpetual calendars make lovely gifts as well. Both of my calendar ideas are easy to make, and they can be customized to match any décor, color grouping, or theme. Each one is easily customizable by changing the photos or the patterned papers used.

Calendar Blocks

For the first calendar, I started with Making Memories blank paper cubes. To these I added patterned papers, photos, and flat embellishments to all sides. You can leave out the photos if you like, or use holiday photos and paper if you wanted to put out the set of cubes as a holiday-themed display for the month.

To keep things simple I used number stickers, but you could place the numbers on the cubes by stamping them, hand-writing, using punched or die-cut numbers, using rub-ons, or hand-cutting them.

You want to make sure you plan accordingly so that you get all the numbers you need on each cube for duplicate digits such as 11 and 22. On your left cube you'll want numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 9. On the right cube you'll want numbers 0, 1, 2, 5, 7, and 8. This will give you all the number combinations you'll need for each day of the month.

Tip: Stick to flat embellishments such as ribbons, stickers, or hand-cut accents. Anything too bulky will cause your cubes to wobble and sit unevenly.

  • cardstock stickers - Flair
  • number stickers - Carolee's Creations
  • archival inks - Ancient Inks

ATC Cardholder Calendar

This idea came about as I was looking for an address in my scrap-rolodex. I love flipping through all the decorated cards and looking at all the amazing designs. I decided to translate this into a 365 -day calendar.

To hold all my cards I decided to use something upright. I searched around and found the ATC card holder made by 7gypsies. It's the perfect size to sit on my table top. Since the original function for the card holder was ATC cards, it was easy to get blank refill cards to use as the base of my calendar pages. Each one is covered in patterned papers, paint, stamped images, and numerous styles and types of embellishments. My goal for these cards was not continuity as much as it was exploration of color and various techniques.

I started the project by using 7gypsies gaffer tape with the months printed on it to create tabs on black divider inserts. Then I created a unique, one-of-a-kind card for each day of the month. Since space is limited each card is decorated front and back with a different sequential day.

I used pre-printed proverb cards from K&Co. on many of my pages. Others include photos and all variety of embellishments. I used my favorite stamp sets to create whimsical doodle-style images for both background and foreground enhancement. The numbers are also created in a variety of styles. Some are stamped, some are stickers or rub-ons, and a number are hand-cut, hand-drawn, and printed varieties.

The style of these cards can be very uniform (using a single line of patterned papers) or each one can be very unique. You are only limited by your own imagination. You could also ask your friends to create cards for your calendar in a circle-journal fashion.

What a visual treat! Each day you can flip the card and be inspired by the colors, textures, and personalized touches that you put into each calendar card. The best part is that since it's a perpetual calendar you can use it year after year.
