Summer Embellishments

by Karen Baxter (Jul 13, 2005)

Looking for a way to add flair to your summer pages? Try these three easy handmade embellishments, which call to mind sun, sand and fun.

Flip-Flops
These darling flip-flops are made from cardstock, MOD patterned paper and Making Memories pink sheer ribbon.

  1. Create a flip-flop template by either drawing freehand, like I did, or tracing an actual flip-flop and reducing it to the desired size on your photo copier.

  2. Using your template, cut a cardstock flip-flop and a slightly smaller paper one. This will give you a mat effect when you layer them.

  3. Flip the template over and repeat for the opposite “foot.”

  4. Adhere the patterned paper to the cardstock.

  5. Cut a piece of ribbon about the same length as the height of the flip-flop and tie a knot in the middle.

  6. Adhere the ribbon to the flip-flop by placing a glue dot under the knot.

  7. Wrap the ends of the ribbon around the back of the cardstock and adhere with them with glue dots as well. Leave a little slack in the ribbon.

Pinwheels
All you need for this embellishment is double-sided patterned paper, adhesive and a brad.

  1. Cut the double-sided patterned paper into a square (Three inches is a good size, but you can make any size square you choose, depending on how large you want the pinwheel).

  2. Cut slits from each corner in toward the center of the square. Do not cut all the way to the middle. Stop short about a ½ inch from the center on each cut.

  3. Gently fold over one of the pointed corners to the center and adhere. Do this with every other corner until four points meet in the center.

  4. Insert brad into center of the completed pinwheel.

Sand-Filled Shaker Box
Use cardstock, double-sided foam adhesive strips and a small piece of clear plastic to create this cute shaker box.

  1. Cut two equal size rectangles from cardstock. 2 ½ x 3 inches is a good size.

  2. Use a punch to create a rectangular hole in the middle of one of the pieces of cardstock. (If you don’t have a rectangle punch, use a square punch and punch two overlapping squares.) This piece of cardstock should now look like a picture frame.

  3. Cover the hole in the frame by attaching a piece of clear plastic to the back of the frame. The clear plastic packaging that many scrapbooking items come in works well.

  4. Adhere two-sided foam tape around the edges of the back side of the frame making sure there are no gaps. This will hold the sand in.

  5. Lay the frame front side down and pour in a small amount of sand.

  6. Remove the remaining adhesive from the tape. Line up the second rectangle flush with the frame and attach to create the back of the box.
