Using the Silhouette to Create Spring Cards

by Amy Sotolongo (Mar 11, 2013)

I love using my Silhouette Cameo to cut shapes to use on layouts and cards. I wanted to create some new cards to send this spring, so I decided to cut my favorite flower files and then use the pile of them to create my cards.

Here is a look at the sheet of the various flowers I cut:

I then used these to create three cards.

For the first card I left the flowers white.

Card #1

To make the card:

  • Cut a large pile of flowers on your Silhouette in a variety of sizes.
  • Take a white card base and layer the flowers, stacking them over each other, larger at the bottom and smaller towards the top.
  • Once your design is set, lift the flowers and adhere them to the card base.
  • Add bling to the center of the flowers.
  • Take a circle label (I used October Afternoon's) and stamp a sentiment (I used Ali Edwards Spring Cheer stamp).
  • Add a bit of washi tape under the label.
  • Add a button to the left side of the label, adding a bit of bakers twine to the center.

Card #2

  • Using the pile of flowers you have already cut, lay them out on a paper towel and grab some mists if you have them.
  • I used the following mists:

            o   Gold (love it!)

            o   Silver

            o   Studio Calico Mint Julep

            o   Crème

            o   Pink

  • Divide the flowers into four piles and mist them with the gold, silver, wave and crème. Add a bit of the pink to some of the crème misted flowers.
  • Once dry, arrange them diagonally from top left to bottom right of a kraft card base.
  • Adhere them once you have them in place.
  • Add pink bling to the centers of the flowers.
  • Add yellow and gray bakers twine.

Card #3

To make this card:

  • Take the remaining flowers you have and place them out to be inked.
  • Cut two stems on your Silhouette and ink them with green ink.  Ink your two largest flowers with pink ink and then ink two more flowers with a deeper pink ink. Next, ink two flowers with lavender ink, and lastly ink a small flower pink.
  • Take your white card base and the pink ink and stamp "spring" across the card base from top to bottom.
  • Add the inked stems and then adhere the flowers layering them as you go.
  • Finally, add bling to the center of the flowers.
  • Add a sentiment. (I added "Celebrate Spring" by Ali Edwards.) Finish the card off with some bakers twine.

By using white cardstock flowers cut on the Silhouette, you can create three spring cards with three different techniques.

The first card uses the tone-on-tone technique, while the second embraces a watercolor feel using mists and the last includes inking the flowers to create texture and dimension.

I hope I have inspired you to cut some flowers, grab your supplies and create away.
