Captured Elements

by Andrea Steed (Jun 1, 2005)

Captured Elements is a new company that recently introduced a line of sports-themed scrapbooking papers. Designed by Stephanie McAtee, the paper line, which is called “160/44-8”, features sports-related definitions, words, numbers and vintage photo collages. Named to represent important numbers in Stephanie’s sons’ sports careers these papers are extremely versatile and convey a sophisticated look that works just as well on pages about tee-ball as on professional sports pages.

When creating the line, Stephanie strived to make paper designs that were both usable and desirable to scrapbookers:

“I was inspired by my boys’ and my own need for sports-themed paper designs. The fact is I simply designed what I knew I would want to work with. I needed designs workable in many different layouts, books; whatever I needed to create while following the boys in their sport careers. A product that I wouldn't get bored working with, and I could use over and over, yet having the ability to give it a different appearance in the end result.”

Four styles of papers make up the 160/44-8 line: Definitions, Words, Numbers and Collage.

Definitions – These double-sided papers are printed in black and white and consist of dozens of printed definitions and information about your favorite sports activities to create an informative themed patterned paper. Themes include band, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, fishing, football, gymnastics, hunting, soccer, softball, swimming, theatre, track and field, volleyball and wrestling.

Words – This paper style features stencil letters, rustic and weathered paper, and a perfect choice of sports-related words. These papers are great to use as backgrounds for your favorite sports-nut photographs. Use them as a whole piece or cut them up to make title blocks, subtitles, or embellishments. You can even use them to make tape transfers!

Numbers – Whether you are documenting a jersey number, sport statistics, the final score or any other number related to your page, these number papers are a perfect match. Designed to look like spray-painted and sponged-stamped stencil numbers, they have a fun look and design. Cut them up to create the custom numbers for your pages.

Collage – Using nostalgic photos from the past in a collage-style design, Stephanie has found a way to merge the old with the new. The vintage photographs and sports images are perfect for borders, embellishments and altered art projects.

To be confident that these papers and designs are versatile and usable in many forms, Stephanie herself has tested them to the fullest extent with altering mediums such as dyes, alcohol inks, bleach, beeswax, and acrylics. Use them in creative ways to make everything from scrapbook pages, altered books, and home décor to greeting cards.

Look for future product line releases from Stephanie McAtee in many themes from Captured Elements. Stephanie promises, “Through Captured Elements, I want to launch lines of product that will inspire artists for any themed art. That is a challenge that I have put on myself. LIFE isn't just about sports!”
