Quoting Dr. Seuss
"Some days I'm yellow, some days I'm blue, ... but it all turns out all right you see, and I go back to being me." These phrases come from "My Many Colored Days" by Dr. Seuss. After I read this as a bedtime story to my son, he asked me what it meant. I explained to him using his own life, how some days he is Buzz Lightyear, other days he is Superman, but in the end he is really himself. As soon as he was in bed, I ran to my scrap table and made this layout. I had been struggling with the photos for days, trying to find a way to tie them together. I realized that modifying the words from this story tied the costume photos together and also tied in the memory of this enjoyable bedtime story. I am not the first in my family to quote Dr. Seuss. My dad still quotes from "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" which he read to me when I was young. One of his favorite quotes led to this layout. Whether or not you live with children and own a small collection of Dr. Seuss books, you can still quote him on layouts. A simple Internet search or a trip to the local bookstore or library will lead you to a large selection of fun quotes. Here is a small selection of quotes you can start with: - "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
- "Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one."
- "Young cat, if you keep your eyes open enough, oh, the stuff you would learn. The most wonderful stuff!"
- "Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try."
- "I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like them Sam I am!"
- "From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere."
- "You're on your own, and you know what you know. And you will be the guy who'll decide where you'll go. Oh the places you'll go."
You can use these quotes completely or shorten them. For example, try using the simple phrase "Oh the places you'll go" for a layout about someone getting his or her first passport. How about "I do not like green eggs and ham" for a layout about a picky eater? Try being even more creative and modifying the quotes, keeping his style in mind: "If you never did, you should. Quoting Dr. Seuss is fun, and fun is good."
