Scrapping Your Camping Trip

by Cindy deRosier (Aug 30, 2012)

I love to go camping, but I just might love scrapping the pictures even more!  Here are some tips for scrapping your camping trip.

Mimic the colors of nature

Camping is all about the great outdoors.  While you might ordinarily choose cardstock and patterned papers based on your subjects' clothing or the latest trendy color combination, camping layouts work really well with the greens and browns of nature.  In my "Happy Campers" layout, I used VersaMark ink to stamp a subtle tree pattern onto the background cardstock to create my own pattern.

Use the shapes and textures from your pictures to reinforce the theme

Do you camp amongst the redwood forests or in grassy meadow?  Perhaps you camp on a beach, near an ocean, lake, or stream?  Use those elements in your layout.  For my "1st Camping Trip" layout, I started with a background paper that reminded me of the pine needles from the pictures of my friends' first camping trip.  I used chalk ink on ivory letters to emphasize the dirt of the forest floor.  Finally, I added simple cardstock trees to the title.

Consider multiple perspectives

As the primary photographer and scrapper in the family, most of the camping layouts in our family albums are from my perspective.  Consider handing the camera over to someone else for a fresh look at your camping trip.  When I handed my camera to my four-year-old son, I was amazed to find that he took pictures of things I had never considered photographing, like the ashes in the firepit.  I created a simple grid of his 16 photos and journaled using his words to create "This is Camping."

Pack in the photos

If you're like me, you take a ton of pictures on camping trips.  Use a simple design to create an eye-catching layout that features a large number of photos.  I fit 12 photos and 4 large paragraphs of journaling on my page "29 Hours of Camping."

My personal record, however, is 33 pictures on my 2-page spread, "Back to Bodega."

Happy camping everyone!
