Travel Scrapbooking: Camping

by Trish Dykes (Jun 4, 2009)

Are people born natural campers? If so, I believe that my husband is one of them. He will pretty much camp anytime and in most weather conditions. I did not experience my first official camping trip until I was twenty and went with my husband-to-be and his family.  Needless to say, some sixteen years later, we have taken our fair share of camping trips and have the photographic evidence to prove it.

As the years went by, our recollection of when and where we camped started to get jumbled with memories from the previous years. In an effort to keep track of the information, my husband started a journal where he records things like the campground name, site number and the dates we visited. I, on the other hand, took the same approach of gathering information but with my camera instead. Using all this information together has made it easier for me to identify and scrapbook our various trips throughout the year. Here are some of the things that I have included in my scrapbook about our camping vacations.

Gathering everyone together for a group photo is a great way to remember who joined you on your trip when you get ready to scrapbook it. With any luck, they can provide you with additional information or photos that you may have forgotten. My suggestion is to take the photos early in the day and also early in the trip. The adults will feel refreshed and the kids will still look their best.

Do you have a special meal that you eat only when out camping? We do. It's my father-in-laws infamous breakfast- yum! Is there something that is considered a "must-bring item" for you when you are camping? In our family we happen to have several essential items, including licorice, firewood, an iPod and forks. (Don't ask.) Document your family's favorite things to eat and bring along to the great outdoors.

What extra adventures do you have along the way? Do you walk along the nature trails or hike into the mountains? Perhaps fishing is more your thing. How about a side trip seeing some history along the way? Be sure to include them as part of your camping layouts as well. Tell what made you decide to do them and what was the best part about them. This is a layout that I did showing photos of a rafting day trip that we took.

Of course, you must not forget to record any unexpected moments along the way or songs that were sang around the campfire. Even if you don't have photos of the actual events, words alone can give future generations a sense of what it was like being there. We still laugh about things that happened at our camping trips many years ago and enjoy when my in-laws tell the stories of their camping trips with my husband's grandparents. I love having the ability to still hear them tell the stories of long ago but know that our camping trips with them won't last forever. Recording some of those details now will definitely help us to be able to re-tell them to our grandchildren someday.

So grab your journal and camera this summer and spend some time outside camping with your family. Enjoy all that nature has to offer, find relaxation at slower pace, and trust me on this one.... don't forget the sunscreen.
