Step-by-Step: Hike

by Andrea Steed (Sep 22, 2008)

A recent hike with friends was the perfect subject for this fabulously earthy paper by Scenic Route. I had several photographs, so I had to creatively arrange and crop them to be sure to get them all in and still leave the tree drawing on the background paper visible. Here's how I did it:

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. First, I cropped six of my eight photos to 2" x 3". I left two of the photographs larger (about 2" x 6") because I wanted them to be the focal photographs.
  2. Next, I sanded the edges of all of the photographs to give them a subtle white outline.
  3. The tricky part was arranging the pictures so that they could all be seen individually, but still only filled half of the background paper. I played with the arrangement until I landed on the tall pyramid-style arrangement, slightly overlapping photographs where I could.
  4. Next, I carefully added rub-on words to the trunk of the tree using the appropriate words from the Travel Mini-Words rub-on sheet.
  5. To create the title, I gently sanded the chipboard letters H-I-K-E and arranged them so they created a slight curve to imitate a walking trail.
  6. Then, I cut a leaf from the Kraft Fall Leaves sheet of patterned paper and crumpled it up to give it additional texture. I placed it to the left of the ‘H' in ‘HIKE.'
  7. Finally, I added a subtitle and journaling onto scraps of the Worn Lined Paper and directly onto the background paper.

I always like when the style of my layout helps to support the subject of the photographs, and in this case, I think it smoothly conveys the outdoorsy feel of the outing. Job completed.
