Who was your high school music teacher? What songs do you love to hear at holiday recitals? Have you ever jammed with a real rock band? Music triggers memories. Have you documented yours?

Start playing some toe-tapping tunes and take a look through your photos. Glance below and see if any of these themes apply to your musical memories. Recitals, rally anthems, marching band ditties, cheerleading fight songs, talent shows, and concerts should all be remembered for the good times they were.

Anthems
With all the political events during the 2004 Presidential election, we have certainly seen our share of political rallies and ads. President Bush and John Kerry both spoke in our town which meant we got to hear the National Anthem many times! High school classes went to see both rallies and the common denominator seemed to be the National Anthem. I used it as the theme of my daughter’s rally layouts.

If you are not familiar with all the words to the national anthem or if you are looking for anthems from other countries, here is a web site where you can find lyrics to any nation’s anthem.

School Cheers and Fight Songs
Pep up to the sound of a big bass drum and a school cheer! Whether it’s at a football game, swim meet, or a rousing pep rally, we always yell with all our might for our school. I added the words to the school fight song to a page about cheerleading camp.

To find the words to your school’s fight song, perform a search on Google with the town name and school mascot name plus the words ‘fight song’. You can also use this public-school search engine to find information about local schools.

Bandies Unite!
If you were in marching band, then you might be considered a Bandie! With this in mind, document the fun trips, practices, recitals, concerts, and friends you made along the way.

Add the lyrics to a rousing high-stepping march or some sheet music from a John Philip Sousa classic and you’ve got a great band page. You can even photocopy the actual student sheet music from parades or performances and use them as your background or accent papers.

On the Stage: Music in Action
Musicals, recitals, concerts (whether pop, rock, classical, or jazz) and dance performances use melodies to convey their entertainment factor to its maximum. If you have a dancer or musician in the family, you will want to document those lyrical memories. Document more than the facts; capture the ‘feel’ of the event. What were you thinking as the performance began? Did you cry? Did you laugh?

In the example shown here, I included one of the song lines from the last act of the Christmas Carol Performance. Famous lines and lyrics make great titles and can be used as added ambiance on your layouts.

Whether it is from a school musical, a teen talent show, a rock concert or an orchestra recital, don’t forget to scrap that song. When you reread a line of music or its lyrics, you enjoy all over again that feeling of music in motion.
