Sympathy Cards

by Trish Dykes (Jul 11, 2007)

Even when you don't know what to say, never underestimate the value of a sympathy card to the receiver. It can bring much needed comfort both at the time of the loss and later on, during the healing process.

Sympathy means to share common feelings or emotions. When you send a card, you are acknowledging that you also are affected by the loss of this person. There are a variety of ways that you can express this to the receiver. How you choose to empathize is a personal choice based on the relationship that you have with that person.

  • Thinking of you: Sending a card with this sentiment is a great way to let them know that your thoughts are with them and that you are sharing the pain of their loss.
  • Religious Verse: If you know the person's beliefs, you can add something that you think will provide comfort or hope to the person(s) left behind. It can help them deal with their grief from a greater perspective.
  • Memories: Include one of your favorite memories with or of the person who has passed away. Humor is appropriate in this situation. Perhaps it will remind the receiver of something they had forgotten and will make him or her smile.
  • Compliments: If you don't have a particular memory to include, you can still say something that makes you think of the deceased. "Your dad was always the first one to volunteer" or "Your mom made the best apple pie." Tell them why the person made an impression on you.
  • Encouragement: Say something that says you understand and are a friend to the receiver, that you are willing to give support and hope. Think of it as sending a hug in a card.

However you decide to send your sympathy, remember that it doesn't have to be elaborate. Saying something simple is okay; the idea is to show the receiver that you care about them and the person who passed away. Ultimately, it really is the thought that counts.
