Scrap Your Valentine Cards

by Julia Sandvoss (Feb 8, 2006)

Maybe you're like me and have that drawer in your house. You know the drawer; it's the one stuffed full of birthday cards, kids' artwork, brochures you've gathered from trips, newspaper clippings, saved report cards and yes..,Valentine's Day cards.

With three children all now in school, every year we have the Valentine party which translates into Valentine cards. It's a big deal and was for me as well! I clearly remember decorating a shoe box at school and on the big day everyone going around and putting their Valentines into the different boxes. I couldn't wait to see which boys gave me cards and what they wrote on them. It's still the same today. We receive Valentine cards through the mail, email or in person. But often we are unsure what to do with them other than to put them in that drawer.

Here are some new twists on ways to use those cards and hopefully empty that drawer out!

Pocket Page

A common way to use cards on your page is by creating a pocket page for them. This can be elaborate or simple but it's a great way to hold those cards. And this is perfect for not just Valentines but any type of card: birthday, anniversary, christenings and more!

Special Card

Many of us have special cards we have received or made for a loved one. This one was very special as my son's preschool teacher asked the parents to make cards for the children for Valentine's Day. This card was really important to save as I had a blast making it and giving it. The card itself is the focus of the layout and became the main element of my page.

Artwork

Almost everyone I know has some kind of artwork made by their child or from a friend or grandchild. They are everywhere on our refrigerators and walls and yes, in that drawer. It seems a shame to throw them all away but a shame not to show them off. My daughter loves to draw me pictures and leave them on my scrapbook table. This one was so special to me I knew it was a keeper and into my drawer it went. Sadly no one can appreciate it there. So out it came, onto the scanner and out of the printer! Haley's artwork now is the focus of my layout as it should be.

Scraps

One of my favorite ways to breathe new life into our leftover cards is to use them as scraps! What better way to use those Valentine cards the kids bring home from school. One way to use them is to punch out pieces of the cards. I used the pieces to make a huge heart. It didn't take many and the kids loved it as a great way to show off the cards they had received. For an even simpler way to use them, I punched two phrases from cards and used those as embellishments on my son's page. Simple, perfect, easy!

Think outside the box

For the last idea I strayed off the path of a traditional layout. I wanted to do something unique with a sweet Valentine card I had given my daughter. I thought it would be the perfect embellishment to use on something she would see everyday in her room. So some paint, papers and one cute card cut-out made an adorable keepsake for Haley.

It was easy to do and hey, maybe now she can keep those special cards she receives in this cute little box to keep my drawer from filling up again!
