Fresh and Funky Thanksgiving Cards

by Jennifer Sizemore (Nov 24, 2008)

Did you know that Benjamin Franklin wanted to name the turkey as the official bird of the United States? In a letter to his daughter, he wrote that even though he is a little vain and a little silly, the turkey is a much more respectable bird than the Bald Eagle. He also wrote that the turkey is a true original native of America.

This brings me to the point of this article. Turkeys are silly, fun and an icon of America on a day that our thoughts turn to the first Thanksgiving. Many Thanksgiving cards will tout the importance of counting our blessings and giving thanks for what we have. I'll make a few of those this year, but I plan to make several that poke fun at our could-have-been national bird.

To get started, I searched the Internet for fun riddles and jokes about turkeys. Here are just a few of my favorites, two of which are used on my sample cards.

Q: Why did the turkey cross the road?

A: It was the chicken's day off.

Q: What do you get when you cross a turkey with a centipede?

A: A drumstick for everybody.

Q: What does a turkey like to eat on Thanksgiving?

A: Nothing, it is already stuffed.

Q: Is turkey soup good for you?

A: Not if you are the turkey!

Q: Why did the turkey bolt down his food?

A: Because he was a gobbler.

Q: What is the difference between a chicken and a turkey?

A: Chickens celebrate Thanksgiving.

Q: What side of the turkey has the most feathers?

A: The outside.

Q: How many turkeys does it take to change a lightbulb?

A: Just one, but it takes five hours.

Asked to write a composition entitled, "What I'm thankful for on Thanksgiving," little Timothy wrote, "I am thankful that I'm not a turkey."

I then created a few fun paper-pieced turkeys from paper scraps to place on the cover of the cards, along with the questions part of the riddle. The inside of each card shows the answer to the riddle. All of the above riddles would be perfect for a fun and funky turkey card! If you just don't get around to making Thanksgiving cards, try using Santa riddles for your Christmas cards. After all, a jolly fat man in a red suit is just as silly and iconic as a turkey!
