Resolutions

by Amy Stultz (Jan 1, 2004)

I must lead the most uneventful life of anyone I know. As my friends are out ringing in the New Year with fancy parties and champagne toasts, I am snuggled up on the couch with my daughter. We have to fight to hear Dick Clark count down the final minutes of the year over the loud snoring of my beloved husband. If we are lucky he will wake up long enough to kiss us at the stroke of midnight, but I will let you in on a little secret; I would not have it any other way.

I outgrew the party scene long ago, and I have never been one for crowded restaurants or dance clubs. I like snuggling on the couch with Lucy (however, I could do without the snoring). For me this holiday has always been more about reflection than partying. After I tuck Lucy into bed and fight to get my husband to go to bed, I like to sit down with the scrapbooks I created over the previous year and reflect on all the wonderful memories that we made as a family. It is even a time for me to mourn the losses that we endured one more time. As the evening winds down I create a mental list of resolutions for the New Year, things that I would like to accomplish; lose 10 pounds, drink more water, obey the speed limit, etc…

How many of you make a list similar to mine each year? How many of you forget all about the list about the third day into the New Year? Why is it that we continue to begin each year with plans we know we will never follow through on? This year I have decided that I am going to begin the year with a new kind of resolution. This year I am going to resolve to be more like the people in my life that I admire and love. In the layout “Live in the Moment,” I reflect upon my late grandfather. He was a wonderful man for so many reasons, but the one thing I admire the most about him was his ability to live in the moment. He looked for the little pleasures in life and took full advantage of them. When he was with you, you received his full attention. I want to be more like that. I want to learn how to set everything aside and live in the moment.

Scrapbooker Maegan Hall and her husband enjoy a wonderful relationship with God. This relationship has changed every aspect of their lives, especially how they portray themselves to the world. In her layout “Just Like You,” Maegan uses the lyrics to a popular Christian song for her journaling. The lyrics express how her husband is striving each day to be just like God, because his young son is looking up to him as a role model. Remember, journaling does not always need to be lengthy or in your own words to be effective. Sometimes a song, poem, or quote can do the job just as well. The important thing is that the journaling you choose conveys what is your heart.

This New Year I challenge to take a close look at the people around you. Reflect upon what it is that you admire the most about and them, and how could you become more like them. Next year will it really matter if you lost 10 pounds, or will it matter that you learned how to live in the moment and enjoy the little things in life like my grandfather always did?

Upload your layout into the Scrapjazz Gallery with “January Journaling Challenge” in the title, as a reminder of your promise to yourself.
