Step-by-Step: Paper Menorah

by Andrea Steed (Dec 5, 2007)
1_320_22An interactive paper Chanukah menorah is a perfect way for little kids to participate in Chanukah rituals without the fire and wax. This Chanukah decoration is easy to make, takes only minutes, and will be a fun keepsake for years to come.

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Trim the metallic cardstock to 5" x 11 ½". Fold it in half and cut a curved bottom and foot using a shape guide like the one pictured below.

Then un-fold the paper to create the base of your menorah.

  2. Using the other half of the metallic cardstock, cut a piece to hold the shammash (tall center candle) from a shape guide like the one pictured below. It should measure about 1 ½" x 2 ½":

  3. Glue this piece to the center top of the menorah so that it is placed slightly above the level edge of the menorah and looks like this:

  4. Next, glue the menorah to the patterned paper, leaving about a ½" at the top of the menorah without any adhesive. You will use this area to create pockets for each candle.

  5. To create the pockets, measure space for 4 candles on either side of the shammash. I created 1" pockets with ¼" in between each pocket. To make the sides of each pocket, I simply used a stapler. If your stapler doesn't reach to the center of the paper, you can poke holes where the staples will go using a paper piercer, push an un-used staple through the holes, and then bend them down on the other side with your fingers.

  6. 6_10The candles are created using 5" x ¾"white cardstock strips, a popsicle stick, and an upside-down heart punch. Simply glue the punch & paper strip to a popsicle stick (for stability).

  7. Create a Star of David using two triangle pieces of navy cardstock layered over each other. To create these two triangles, trim the cardstock to 6" x 6" and then cut from one corner across to the other along the diagonal.

  8. Adhere the star and add penwork to outline the edges and write the "Happy Chanukah" message.
  9. Set 4 eyelets along the top edge of the background paper. I made holes 1" from each edge as well as 5" in from each edge so that the ribbon would create two 4" strips at the top of the page. String ribbon through the eyelets to create a hangar.

  10. Use double sided tape adhesive to adhere a standard business-sized envelope to the back of the project. You can keep the unused candles and the Chanukah blessings stored inside it.

Your paper menorah is complete! Your kids will love adding a new candle to the pockets each night and you can rest assured that they won't burn the house down! J
