Halloween: The Whole Story in Pictures

by Amy Stultz (Oct 28, 2005)

There is something about fall that gets to me. The pumpkins, trips to the orchard, and fresh apple butter, I love it all. My children however are less appreciative of nature’s artwork and more interested in plastic pumpkins, fabric ghosts, and spooky monsters. I am sure at one time we all loved fall for the one day of candy collecting rather than an entire season of crisp leaves. Keeping this in mind I am able to embrace the holiday for my children.

For them I have spent too much money on an expensive elephant costume for my 6-month-old son. For them I have sewn 200 leaves to a shirt and skirt to transform my daughter into a “jungle girl.” For them I spread fake cotton cobwebs all over my front bushes. For me, well, for me they share some of their Halloween loot and humor me as I capture the entire event on film. Halloween, a day for children, should be remembered and recorded each year. Following is a list of “not to be missed” shots to include on your photo list.

Before

  • Your costume being sewn
  • Your costume being tried on
  • A series of transformation shots as you are getting ready
  • The empty trick-or-treat bag
  • Your outdoor decorations before the sun goes down
  • The full bowl of treats ready to be handed out

During

  • The finished costume
  • The trick-or-treater fully dressed in costume
  • The candy being handed out
  • Children approaching a door for candy
  • Treats being placed into a candy bucket
  • The half-full candy-collection bucket
  • The children walking down the sidewalk (away from you and towards you)
  • Your outdoor decorations after the sun goes down
  • The half-empty bowl of candy still to be passed out

After

  • The full candy-collection bucket
  • The candy sorted into piles
  • The treats being consumed
  • The now-empty bowl of candy
  • The face paint removal
  • Tired trick-or-treaters asleep for the night
  • The costume in a pile on the floor

Including some or all of these before, during, and after shots on your photo list will allow you to capture the entire story this year.
