Reduce Your Stress: Plan for Christmas Now

by Vistaprint (Nov 26, 2012)

While most people might not feel ready to go there yet, Christmas is not really that far away. It may seem ridiculous to start planning for the holidays even before the stores start bringing in their decorations, but there really are some great reasons to start early. If you typically have a hectic schedule or just generally don't deal well with extra pressure, then planning ahead makes a lot of sense. In fact, in a staff article on MayoClinic.com, it's explained that carefully planning out your time has a positive impact on stress levels and overall health.

As we all know, Christmas, with all of its  gatherings, parties, decorating and gift giving tends to add a lot of stress to many people's already chaotic lives. So why not start extra early so that you can enjoy the holiday season when it finally rolls around? Here are some things you can do ahead of time so that you can maintain you day-to-day sanity and then sit back and enjoy the festivities this year.

Shop: Exchanging gifts can be a lot of fun, but thinking of gift ideas can be very stressful, especially when you do it last minute or are short on money. By planning ahead you will have more time to think of the perfect gift for each person on your list and you will also have time to shop around and compare prices. On top of that, you can find some amazing deals when you shop online and with extra time on your hands you can order from pretty much wherever you want and have lots of time to get your items before Christmas. The gifts will be delivered right to your door and you won't have to set foot in a crowded mall. Talk about relaxing!

Order cards: You know those incredible personalized Christmas cards you get from certain people each year - the ones with beautiful family photos or highly personalized messages? If you plan ahead you can be the one with the enviable Christmas cards. Once your cards arrive you will even have plenty of time to write them out at your own pace and get them in the mail ahead of schedule.

Bake/Cook: If you usually do a lot of Christmas baking, then doing some early can really cut down last-minute stress. No, this doesn't mean that you'll have to serve your holiday guests stale sugar cookies and moldy pound cake. A lot of cookies, bars and loaves freeze very well. A couple of months before the big day, start your holiday baking. Whenever you have a bit of spare time, just throw in a batch of cookies. After they're cool, simply pack them up and stash them away in your freezer. If you have company coming to stay with you over the holidays, then you may also want to start prepping and freezing meals. There are plenty of casseroles and soups that freeze very well and maintain all their homemade goodness when you re-heat them later.

Create: People who are crafty and like making gifts or decorations will have a lot more time for creating if they start early. Plan out parties, organize photos, scrapbook, sew, knit, paint, cut and paste... do whatever you're good at.

When Christmas finally hits you'll have them all wondering where you find the time to do so much. The truth is that you'll likely be far less stressed than when you did half as much in a short amount of time. You may even find that you enjoy getting in the festive spirit ahead of time; it's like extending the excitement and anticipation.
