Celebrating St. Nicholas Day
by Heidi Anne Giebel
(Dec 6, 2012)
St. Nicholas Day is celebrated worldwide on December 6. Traditionally it was a day to remember St. Nicholas who was a bishop during the fourth century. St. Nicholas' memory was kept alive in Holland where he was respectfully known as Sinterklaas. Once the Dutch came to America, their beloved Sinterklaas became Santa Claus, the jolly old elf we have all grown up loving. Celebrating St. Nicolas Day is still a popular tradition in many countries including the United States. The tradition goes that on December 5, children will shine up their shoes and leave them out on their doorstop for St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas will come in the night and fill the shoes with treats, small toys, candy and cookies. Then on the morning of December 6, the children will discover their shoes and all the presents St. Nick has left for them. This tradition lends itself perfectly to creating beautiful holiday scrapbook pages. The photo opportunities are endless. Some ideas are photographing your children shining up their shoes,
placing their shoes on the doorstop,
peeking out the window the next morning and exploring all the treats that St. Nick left them.
Once you have these photos of your St. Nicholas Day celebration you can then turn them into scrapbook pages and mini albums. Don't forget to include a note from St. Nick; you can add that to your scrapbook page too.
