Voting and Election Day

by Denise Gormish (Nov 6, 2012)

It's time for another presidential election! Elections are full of excitement, passions, squabbles and freedom. Whether it is your first election or your fifteenth election, take time to remember the event with photographs, journaling and a beautiful layout design.

Topics. There are a lot of topics to consider for pages about voting and elections. How has the current election influenced you? What did you enjoy or dislike about this election? Who did you vote for and why? Were you involved in a particular candidate's campaign? No matter your contribution, small or large, take time to record it on a scrapbook page.

While a current election seems a great topic, there are others, including the following: your first time voting, voting in local elections vs. state or national elections, the most memorable election, comparing the candidates in an election, a recent election, your voting history, how your political views and voting have changed, your party allegiance, a voting opportunity that mattered, campaigning for a candidate and your election day routine.

Photographs. Photographs of the election can give focus to scrapbook pages. Photographs of the candidate, images of the election and the candidate's logo can all be used on a page. The little details can make memorable images as well. Consider adding such things as a handmade poster, your election site, a button or an "I voted" sticker.

Journaling. Following the topic of choice, add journaling that correlates. For a layout that includes information about a specific candidate you can include speech quotes, slogans, advertising, soundbites and misquotes. In my layout I included a quote from a speech.

Supplies. Supplies for pages about voting and elections might include stars, the flag or Washington D.C. imagery.  Patriotic-themed paper, chipboard, stickers and die cuts make excellent additions to a scrapbook page. Images from background patterned paper such as the U.S. Capitol building or the White House make excellent choices as well.

Layout. Layouts about voting and elections often work well with a red, white and blue color scheme. Stars and flags are also common themes that can be repeated on a page or a series of pages. Glitter adds to the excitement of the topic. Make sure you include any memorabilia in your layout. Memorabilia could include voting stubs, campaign ads and notes.

Albums. If you have voted in several elections, you might want to do an entire album about the elections in which you have participated. Include for whom you voted, why and the end result. Were you disappointed or pleased? If you were involved in the campaign, include details about your involvement. When you create your album, you can settle on a specific color scheme and layout design. Then, you can maintain that same style from election to election.

In the midst of all the craziness of elections, remember to take photographs and record your memories.
