Altered Holiday Paint Can
Buttons are an inexpensive embellishment that can be found in a multitude of colors. They can be used to dress up just about any scrapbook page or project. I have a collection of thousands and don't use them nearly as much as I should. In the spirit of the holidays, I chose to make an altered paint can for this month's button theme. It was really easy and fun! How to create a similar paint can for yourself: Supplies: - a small paint can purchased from any home improvement store (Don't forget the key to open it!)
- one sheet of 12" x 12" patterned paper
- rickrack
- cardstock scraps (I used yellow for the star, green for under the button tree and brown for the tree trunk.)
- letter stickers or die-cut letters
- 15 half-inch green buttons
- 7 small white buttons (1/4 inch) and one white half-inch button
- one large snowflake die cut or sticker
- 7 snowflake die cuts or stickers
- a star die cut or sticker
- white Soufflé pen--mine is by Sakura of America
- circle cutter
- adhesive (I used tacky glue for the rickrack, Duck Brand adhesive for the paper and glue dots to adhere the buttons)
Paint Can Directions: - Sand the sides of the paint can and the top of the lid so that the adhesive will adhere to the metal. Clean off the residue with a tack cloth. Set the lid aside.
- Cut the patterned paper into two 4 5/8" by 6 ¾" pieces. Adhere the patterned paper to the sides of the can.
- Using tacky glue, adhere the rickrack to the top and bottom of the can. Set the can aside and let the glue dry. The tacky glue sets quickly so this shouldn't take that long.
- Ink the edges of a star sticker or die cut. Adhere the star to the paint can at the top, right below the rickrack.
- Cut a 2 ½-inch equilateral triangle out of green cardstock.
- Cut the trunk of the tree out of the brown cardstock. Adhere the trunk to the green triangle. On the paint can, adhere the tree just below the star.
- Using glue dots, adhere the buttons in a triangle pattern over the green cardstock tree, making sure to cover the cardstock completely.
- Take the white soufflé pen and randomly dot the buttons to "decorate" your tree.
- Using your letter stickers or die-cut letters, adhere "NO" slightly to the left of the tree and "EL" slightly to the right.
- Adhere the small snowflake die cuts or stickers randomly around the rest of the can. Using glue dots, adhere the small ¼-inch white buttons to the center of each small snowflake.
Paint Can Lid: - Out of the remaining patterned paper, cut out a 3 ½ inch circle. Adhere it to the top of the lid.
- Adhere the large snowflake sticker or die cut in the center of the lid. Using a glue dot, adhere the half-inch white button in the middle of the snowflake.
Voila! You are done and you have an adorable container to fill with holiday treats for your favorite person!
