Winter Wonderland: Holiday Decorations
I can't think of anything nicer than having my family in my home for the holidays. Sharing hand-made gifts and decorations is an extension of the love I feel for them. Taking time to make something special and unique helps me show the ones I love that I've been thinking of them, and that I want my home to reflect that. I created six projects in a Winter Wonderland theme to use for my holiday decorations this year. The projects are: Paper Luminary, Party Invitation, Star Ornament, Wire and Paper Star Garland, Stamped Candy Bowl, and a Personalized Nugget Box. I hope you'll give these holiday decorations a try, and share your creations in the Scrapjazz.com gallery! Paper Luminary Supplies: White Paper Lunch Sack (Paperbilities) Silver Metallic Paper (Paper Accents) Snowflake Vellum (Paper Pizzazz) Frame Die Cut (Sizzix) Snowflake Stickers (Jolee's, EKSuccess) Scallop Decorative Scissors (Fiskars) ¼-Inch Hole Punch (Fiskars) mat knife small cutting mat tea light candle small glass votive holder Directions: Trim the top of your bag using the scallop-edge decorative scissors; punch a hole in the center of each scallop. Using your silver metallic paper, and your diecut machine, cut a frame . Trace the center area of the frame onto the white lunch sack and cut out this area with a mat knife. Trim vellum slightly larger than the hole in the bag and adhere to the inside of the paper sack. Adhere your frame to the outside. Embellish with Jolee's stickers. CAUTION: Only use a small tea light candle inside the luminary. Always place your tea light candle inside a small glass votive holder in the center of your bag, and never leave a burning candle unattended. Party Invitation Supplies: cardstock (Paper Accents) patterned paper (Creative Imaginations) Scallop Decorative Scissors (Fiskars) ¼-Inch Hole Punch (Fiskars) Glitter (Stickles) "Invitation" stamp (Stampin' Up) ribbon (Offray) stickers (Jolee's, EK Success) Directions: Trim your cardstock to 4 ¼ inches by 11 inches. Fold in half to create your card base. Using your scallop scissors trim the right edge of the front of the card. Evenly place ¼-inch holes in the scallops of the edging. Adhere a strip of paper on the inside edge of the card so it is behind the scalloped edge when the card is closed. Attach a piece of ribbon centered over this strip. Adhere a scrap of patterned paper to the front of the card. Stamp your sentiment onto the lower right-hand corner. Using your Stickles glitter fill in all the areas of white on the patterned paper (for this pattern it was the snowflake sections, as well as the white swirls and dots). Once dry, tie a wider scrap of ribbon around the front of the card and place a snowflake sticker on one end. Wire and Star Garland Supplies: Silver Wire (Darice) Clear Plastic Beads (Darice) Iridescent Sequins (Darice) patterned papers (Creative Imaginations, Sandy Lion, and Carolee's Creations) 3 monochromatic cardstock colors (Color Mates) wire cutters needle-nose pliers ¼-Inch Teal, Blue, and White Eyelets (Making Memories) Star die-cut (AccuCut) Directions: Die cut as many stars from patterned paper as you would like to have in your garland; I chose to use 10 stars. Cut two fewer stars from solid cardstock. Adhere a solid star at an angle to the back of all but two patterned stars. . Attach eyelets to two sides of each star, except for your single-layer stars. Attach an eyelet to the center of these stars. (These two single-layer stars are the beginning and end of your garland.) Starting with one end star, string your star onto an 8-inch piece of silver wire. Add beads or sequins, creating swirls or bends in various areas. Be sure to swirl the beginning of your wire so that it doesn't pass back through the eyelet. String your wire through one of the eyelets in a layered star, add beads and sequins, then curl the end and use your wire cutters to cut off any excess. Use 8- to 10- inch pieces of wire to connect all of your stars together in the same manner. Be sure to randomly bend and swirl your wire to make it more interesting. Also add more of your beads and sequins in random areas for some glitz and glamour! Stamped Candy Bowl Supplies: colored glass bowl (IKEA) White Permanent Ink (StazOn) solid detail stamp of your choice (something simple works best. I used an eight-point star from Rubber Stampede)
Directions: Wash and dry your candy bowl thoroughly. Apply an even coat of white permanent ink to your stamp and very carefully roll it onto the sides of your bowl. Use even pressure and roll from right to left to get the whole image on the curved area of the bowl. If you mess up, remove the image immediately with a baby wipe, allow it to dry, and then try again. TIP: Small stamps work better than large or overly detailed stamps. Square dishes are easier to stamp than round ones. This bowl will not be dishwasher safe. If you need to wash out the inside of your candy dish a damp rag is your best bet. Star Ornament Supplies: patterned paper (Creative Imaginations) stapler/staples strong adhesive (I like Tacky Tape, ¼ inch thick) button sticker (Jolee's, EK Success) ¼-inch eyelet (Making Memories) ribbon (Offray) Directions: Using a 12" x 12" sheet of patterned paper, fold your paper every inch to create a fan shape. Staple the center of your fan. Trim both edges in the same direction at a deep angle. Open up your fan towards the top and bottom and adhere the sides together using a strong adhesive. You now have your star. At the top point in your star place an eyelet and make a hanger for your star with ribbon. TIP: My star is quite large. It would be great as a centerpiece on a fireplace mantel or hanging from the center of a doorway. To create smaller versions more appropriate for Christmas tree decorations simply start with a 6" x 6" piece of patterned paper, and follow the rest of the directions as stated. Personalized Nugget Box A nugget box is a small box that slides open to reveal a word. The word is stamped or printed onto decorated labels that cover miniature Hershey's Nugget candy bars, hence the name, "Nugget Box." I made a box big enough to hold five Nuggets that spell out "PEACE" when it's fully opened. Supplies: solid cardstock (Color Mates) patterned paper (Creative Imaginations) alphabet stamps (Hero Arts) 2-3 shades of coordinating ink (Stampin' Up and Tsukineko) snowflake stickers (Jolee's, EK Success) small sponge Glue Dots address labels (Avery, 1" x 2 5/8") Hershey's Nugget Chocolates Directions: NUGGETS - Sponge multiple colors onto five address labels. Keep your colors soft. Using alphabet stamps and dark ink that coordinates with your project, stamp your desired word, one letter per label. I chose to do the word "PEACE." Once your ink is dry you can attach the five labels to your candies, gently wrapping them and placing them aside for now. BOX BOTTOM - Trim a piece of cardstock 7 ¼ inches long by 3 5/8 inches wide. Next score your box in the following measurements from left to right along the long edge. Score 1/2 inch from the left edge, then at 1 1/8 inch, then at 2 3/8 inches and lastly at 3 inches. This should leave you 1/2 inch between the last score mark and the right edge of the paper. Score the short sides 1/2 inch from each edge, and again 1 1/8 inch from each edge. Next, trim the three corner pieces from all four corners. You'll be left with the basic shape needed to create your box. Cut the small side tabs away from the main body of the box, as shown in the example. Fold the two long sides up towards the center at the inner most crease. Use glue dots to attach the small flaps you just cut to the long sides, creating the box shape. Fold in the long sides at the outside scored area. Fold down the two short areas. Your base is now complete. You can place your nuggets into the box and set it aside while you finish up the top. BOX TOP - Cut your patterned paper 5 1/8 inches long by 4 5/8 inches wide. Score the paper the long way at the following intervals (moving from left to right): ½ inch, 2 inches, 2 5/8 inches and 4 inches. That should leave 5/8 inch from the last score mark and the right edge of the paper. The wider areas are the top and bottom of your lid. The two thinner areas are adhered one over the other using glue dots. You've essentially created a square tube. Decorate the top side of your tube any way you would like. I used two layers of paper and added a stamped name and some extra Jolee's stickers. Slide the lid over your filled base and you have now completed a Nugget Box! Now it's your turn to inspire us. Create your own holiday decorations and be sure to share your projects with us in the Scrapjazz gallery.
