Tag-Team Scrapping

by Maureen Spell (Aug 30, 2007)

When I was in junior high, I remember how we would do round-robin writing. We would all start writing a story and when the timer went off, trade with the person on the right and continue writing their story. It was fun to get my story back and read the end results. It never was what I envisioned starting out, but was even better with all the different twists and turns the story ended up taking. I thought that it would be fun to try this concept with a scrapbooking layout. I asked my friend, Libby Weifenbach, to help.

  1. Set the Scene - It is easier to do this if you have a common theme. It could be as specific or general as you want. I picked the theme of friendship.
  2. Start Small - I started the layout and intentionally only added a couple of things, because Libby and I had planned to pass this layout back and forth a couple of times. You might even set a timer and give yourself 5 or 10 minutes and then pass the layout to the other person.
  3. Swap the page - Now I will admit that since Libby and I are both digital scrappers this was pretty easy to do even though we live states apart. We just shared the file over the Internet. If you paper scrap, try tag-team swapping at a crop or with a nearby friend.

Libby is known for her awesome title-work, so she added the title, a photo of herself and the stitching and then sent the layout back to me.
  4. Share the final results - It was neat to see how our page ended up.

Libby and I were both surprised to find out how much this challenge stretched us. It wasn't as easy as we thought it would be. It caused us to really think about the things we added and how they worked (or didn't work) with the theme and the other elements previously added. Just the type of challenge I love! It was fun and made me try new things and I can't wait to try it again. The best part though, is that I now have a special page in my album that was created with a good friend.

Tips:

  • If you paper scrap, you might want to use double-sided removable tape and then after the final swap permanently place things down. That way each person can move things around a little to work with what they want to add.
  • If you digital scrap, simplify the type layers before swapping. The person you are swapping with might not have that particular font, and by simplifying the layer you will keep the design intact.
