Celebrating Dad
Father's Day is June 20th. Are you ready to honor one of the most influential men in your life? Dad changed your oil, moved your furniture, escorted you to your wedding, and inspired you to give all your endeavors your best effort. He is truly an unsung hero. It's time to celebrate Dad and sing his praises in your scrapbook pages.
If you are a little intimidated to start or you are not used to working with masculine colors, then start simple. Try creating a layout about your Dad's personality, using adjectives to describe all the traits you remember about him. See the example layout provided. Remember to include pictures of all the things that make you remember or think of Dad, like the lawn mower, his car, the bible, the remote control, etc. Whatever your Father is passionate about is worth recording in your scrapbooks.
Once you get the hang of it, go deeper with your scrapbooking portrait of your father. What was his career? How did he feel about it? How did it impact your family? How are you similar to your father, both physically and in personality? How do the two of you differ? How is your relationship with your father different from that of your siblings? What activities do the two of you enjoy? What are his hobbies? What does he think of scrapbooking? How do you spend time together now? What is your favorite memory of your father? Remember to document the relationship between your parents. What does your Mom say about your Dad's parenting style? How was he helpful to her with the children? What are some "Dad sayings" that everyone in your house is familiar with? What are the quirks that make Dad, well Dad?
In the event that your father has passed on, making a tribute album can be therapeutic and healing. If possible, try to obtain photos throughout various stages of your father's life-from childhood to old age. Recording your thoughts can also be beneficial for your children, who may not have ever known your father (their grandfather). Be sure to include insight into your father's character and the experiences that influenced his values.
There may also be other father-figures in your life that have a place in your heart, and therefore should have a place in your scrapbook. Remember uncles, family friends, step-fathers, grandfathers and father-in-laws when designing pages this Father's Day. Your husband may also be a father, so work with your children to create a page about their relationship, and his role in parenthood.
Most of all, remember to record the lessons Dad taught you. We all have our moments where we wish we had listened closer to the advice Dad gave. Dads have the greatest gift of wisdom, patience, and strength all rolled into one. Record Dad's advice in detail, it still comes in handy no matter how old you are. Remember the stories that Dad told you, for in these are the real essence of why we scrapbook. Happy Father's Day!
