Celebrating Grandparents

by Denise Gormish (Dec 29, 2006)

"What children need most are the essentials that grandparents provide in abundance. They give unconditional love, kindness, patience, humor, comfort, lessons in life. And, most importantly, cookies," Rudolph Giuliani said. Grandparents provide a pivotal role in our lives as children and as adults. In our scrapbooks we can celebrate these special people with special scrapbook pages.

Here are some ways to include grandparents in your scrapbooks:

  • Photographs. If your grandparents or children's grandparents are alive, remember to take their photographs. Capture their expressions and relationships with their grandchildren on film. If you only have old photographs, go ahead and use them. Old photographs can be used for a variety of topics. The photographs do not have to be tied to the event. To use old photographs, reprint them to provide more freedom in creating. When doing a tribute to my daughters' grandmother, I I scanned the photographs and reprinted them. It gave me freedom to use the reprints without worrying about ruining the originals.
  • Activities. Grandparents are active today. Look at their lives and consider what they like to do. Do they hike, travel, play games, or work? Is there a place they like to go? What are some of their habits? Grandparents and their activities are worthy subjects for a scrapbook page. Let their special and everyday activities provide inspiration .
  • Their Story. Grandparents have a unique perspective. They can see changes over a long period of time. Ask them what they have seen and how things have changed. Listen to them tell their stories. Record the stories on your scrapbook pages.
  • Connections. Think of the connections between yourself and your grandparents or connections between your children and their grandparents. What is similar? Has hair color, a hobby or a character trait been passed from one generation to the next? When my daughter took up lacing, it reminded me so much of my own mother. When I realized the connection between my daughter and her grandmother I created the layout, "Connections," to document it.

  • Their Writings. There is something precious about looking at someone's handwriting. The handwriting or other writings of a grandparent are a treasure. Preserve them in a scrapbook.
  • Tribute Album. Big or small, a tribute album can be a special way to acknowledge grandparents. The subject of the album could be as simple as a series of photographs over the years or as complex as a tribute to their career. Pay tribute to grandparents with a special album.

Grandparents are special. Preserve their stories and their lives through scrapbook pages and albums.
