Autumn Embellishment Projects

by Tiffany Roberts (Sep 21, 2005)

Autumn is in the air…I can feel it. Cool rainy days provide us with lots of scrapping time, and the beautiful colors all around are sure to inspire scrapbookers around the country to pick up trimmers and cardstock in an effort to create layouts dedicated to all the wonderful events during this magical time of year.

Below are four autumn-themed projects to jump-start your fall scrapping.

Embellished Slide Mount - The first project is an embellished slide mount. I’ve used a small “give thanks” stamp on mine, but you could stamp or handwrite any sentiment that is appropriate for your layout or greeting card.

Supplies:
Black Slide Mount
Metallic Gold Sharpie Marker
Metal-Rimmed Tag
Autumn-Colored Stamping Ink
Leaf Sticker
Baby Powder
Two Different Ribbons in 3-inch lengths

First, trace along the outside and inside edges of the black slide mount with metallic gold pen. Next, staple a small piece of ribbon to one corner and place a leaf sticker on top. (I chose to brush a small amount of baby powder to the exposed adhesive areas of my sticker so that it doesn’t adhere to anything else until I’m ready to use it.) Since I didn’t have a gold-rimmed tag I used the metallic marker and colored the edge of my tag and let it dry. The next step to this project is to sponge autumn-colored ink onto the center of the tag and then stamp or hand-write the desired sentiment. The final step is to tie the tag to the slide with a second piece of decorative ribbon.

Journaling Tag & Library Pocket - The second project is a stamped journaling tag and library pocket. I’ve used small, tag-style alphabet stickers to create a title, but you could choose to write by hand, stamp, or print by running your pocket through your printer.

Supplies:
Library Pocket
Manila Shipping Tag
Leaf Stamp
Embossing Ink
Gold Embossing Powder
Gold Wire
Small, Tag-Style Alphabet Stickers
Crackle Background Stamp
Three to Five Shades of Autumn-Toned Stamping Ink
Sponge Brayer
Three Different Ribbons in 3-inch lengths

Start by stamping the library pocket with a leaf stamp using clear embossing ink. Sprinkle gold embossing powder over stamped images and heat set. Next use a sponge brayer to add layers of color over the embossed area. I like to use the inexpensive sponge brayers from the paint section of my local hardware store. Remember to start with your lightest color ink and work up towards the darkest shade. Apply ink to the tag in the same manner. Next drag the edges of your pocket and tag in the darkest shade of ink to define the edges. Stamp your manila tag using a large crackle background stamp, and tie multiple ribbons to the top to finish this piece. The final step is to decide on your title and string letters onto gold wire. Adhere the letters to the front of your pocket.

Title Block - The third project is a title piece with words describing falling leaves. This piece was made 8 ½” wide, but could easily be altered for a larger or smaller layout.

Supplies:
Five Shades of Coordinating Cardstock
Vellum
Computer Font
Leaf-Shaped Button
Glue Dot
Vellum Adhesive

Create base by trimming cardstock to 2 ½” x 8 ½”. Trim four squares (one per color) into 2” x 2” squares and adhere to the cardstock base. Chose your decorative font and type out the words, “Swirling, Falling, Twirling, Leaping, Floating, Crunching, Dancing, Whipping, Drifting.” I used my Word Art function to place the words in a gentle wave. Print title onto vellum and trim to 1” x 7”. Adhere to your layout with an adhesive for use with vellum paper. Cut the shank off the back of a leaf-shaped button and adhere to your title with a glue dot.

Photo Mat – This last project is my favorite by far! This is an autumn-toned photo mat. What I like best about this project is its versatility. You can take this design and alter it in size and/or color to suit any layout, not just a fall-themed one. Also this is the perfect project for using up those scrap papers.

Supplies:
Two Shades of Coordinating Cardstock
One Bottle Cap
Small Alphabet Stamps
StazOn Ink
Brown Stamping Ink
Five to Six Coordinating Patterned Papers
Large Pop Dot

Start by cutting your photo mat to the desired size. Ink all four edges. Create a second larger mat, ink sides and adhere to the first. My mat is 4 ¼” square and placed onto a 4 ½” square piece. To create the background, cut your base one inch larger than each dimension of the mat. My base is 5 ½” x 5 ½”. Next, tear or cut small scraps of coordinating patterned papers and ink all edges for interest. Make sure that your scraps are at least one inch wide so that your photo mat will cover the interior edges. Layer pieces all around the four edges of your base. When finished adhere your photo mat to the center. The last step is to stamp a title word onto a gold-colored bottle cap and affix to the corner using a thick pop dot.

I hope these projects inspire you to get out and take some fabulous fall photos and get to scrapping!
