Scrapbooking Your Faith

by Maureen Spell (Feb 7, 2006)

I remember the first time I read about scrapbooking. Something in my spirit got excited about this hobby. I knew scrapbooking was something I was supposed to do. It was a great creative outlet for me and was a way to record special happenings in the life of my family. I quickly started documenting events and milestones, but something was missing--a full part of who I am and what influences my family was not included in my scrapbooks. I realized that if someone were to read those early pages, they would have no clue how important my faith is to me. I became determined to add that element to my scrapbooks. At first it seemed daunting to actually put what was in my heart onto my pages, but after a while it became like second nature to weave those words into my scrapbooks. Here are some ways to accomplish it:

Recount the importance and meaning of special religious events.

Baptisms, christenings, weddings or other spiritually significant events are a perfect opportunity to share the deeper meaning. Instead of just recording the time, place and who was there, write the why. What does this mean to you? How did you feel? Why is this important?

Pair a picture with a scripture verse, value or creed.

This method most often involves starting with the journaling first. Look at a picture and see if a certain verse or character trait is displayed in the photo. Then pair that photo with the journaling. Sometimes there might not be a picture that depicts what you want to say. You can create a page using only journaling, or stage a photo as I did in my "Family Creed 3" layout.

Incorporate faith journaling with your regular layouts.

I like to include faith journaling with my kids' everyday layouts. Use those seemingly story-less photos as an opportunity to share a message from your heart.

Capture miracle moments and trying times.

There will be times in your life that are hard and others that can only be explained as divine intervention. What got you through those tough times? What was the outcome? How did you see the hand of God work in your life?

Document thoughts on a Bible study or devotional book.

Jane Swanson and her daughters studied a devotional book together with other women from her church. Jane took the lessons learned and scrapbooked them. This is such a great way to reiterate what was taught, reinforce those lessons, and reflect on the time the girls spent together growing in their faith.

Include meaningful prayers, songs or quotes.

So many songs and prayers have encouraged me over the years. Use those words as journaling on your pages.

Your pages can be an encouragement during trying times when you remember how your faith sustained you or others in your family. It can be a tangible reminder of how many blessings your family has received. Your pages can document the way God moved in your life. So whether you create separate faith albums, or incorporate faith journaling into your everyday pages, you are passing on a spiritual heritage to another generation.
