We're Thankful for

by Denise Gormish (Nov 23, 2005)

In an old episode of The Cosby Show, the Huxtable family gathers around the table for the Thanksgiving meal. Before the meal each person tells the family what they are thankful for. It is always good for us to think of the things that we are thankful for in our lives. Thanksgiving reminds us to be thankful.

Our scrapbook pages and projects can have thankfulness in them. Here are some ideas for journaling thankfulness in our scrapbooks:

Journaling Topics. As you think about journaling in your scrapbooks, remember to write your reasons for being thankful. We all have positive aspects of our lives. Some of those might include the following:

  • Family and friends. Remember your family whether they are far or near and the friends you have made. Where would we be without family and friends? They make a big impact on us and sometimes we forget to thank them for all they do for us.

  • Material blessings. Remember all the wealth we have each day. Include big items like your home, car, and job, but also include the smaller things like a pet, a hobby or food.

  • Spiritual Blessings. Whatever your religious affiliation, remember the promises and relationships gained from that affiliation.

  • Health. Whether for yourself, a friend or a family member, be thankful for good health or for overcoming a health issue.

  • Accomplishments. Each of us has triumphs in our lives. Journal about those with thanksgiving in a layout.

  • Country. Wherever you live, consider the positive aspects of your country, state and city. Journal about your thankfulness in a layout.

Think about the positive and include it in your journaling.

Tell Stories. When choosing a topic of thanksgiving, there are several writing approaches. One effective approach for a thanksgiving topic is to tell a story. Think of a specific incident that shows what you were thankful for and in what way. Have you overcome something, made great strides, gotten help from someone, etc.? Tell the story with dialogue, descriptions and action. Tell the story from the third person point of view to increase the drama or tell it from the first person point of view, revealing your feelings and thoughts of thankfulness.

Use Other Sources. When journaling about thanksgiving, remember to include sources other than your own words. Outside sources include thankful sayings, poems, scriptures and songs. In my layout, “Richly Blest,” I expressed my thankfulness for my family and used the words to a song about being blessed.

Keep a Journal. Can’t think of what to write? Don’t have a clue about what you’re thankful for right now? Need some inspiration? If so, then keep a “Thankful” journal. Use it daily, writing down at least one thing you are thankful for each day. Don’t write negative things, only positive things. In time you will look past the obvious and see the everyday moments that are worth being thankful for and you will have a collection of journaling ideas.

Thanksgiving reminds us what we have to be grateful for. Remember those things for today and for the future by including them in your scrapbooks.
