Entertainment Center Inspiration

by Allyson Bright (Aug 26, 2005)

So often, I’m told that inspiration is everywhere. There are women who can see a scrapbook page when they look at a box of cereal. I’ll admit, I’ve never been one of them. While I’m still learning to see the world through my “scrapbooking eyes,” there is one place that constantly serves as a source of inspiration to me—my entertainment center. I’m not talking about my television set or stereo, but rather the DVDs and CDs that sit beside it.

Suffering from scrapper’s block? Movies and music can be a huge source of ideas and inspiration for the everyday scrapbooker. How many times have you heard that “perfect” song? Lyrics make a great journaling starter, as do movie quotes. Package design and size can provide even more ideas. Next time you’re stuck, try one of these fun exercises to help you get a jump-start on your project.

Ideas for Page Topics & Journaling

  • Make a list of your ten favorite movies or songs of all time. What did you love about them? This in itself can serve as a fun topic for a scrapbook page.

  • Notice the titles of all the movies sitting on your shelf. You have an entire library of page titles at your fingertips. Consider these great movies as page titles: The Wedding Singer, Forces of Nature, Raise Your Voice, Sister Act…the list goes on and on.

  • Do you and your special someone have a favorite song? Have you ever heard a song that reminded you of a special moment? Use the song as the journaling and title for your page. Consider hidden journaling if you need even more room to tell your story.

(For my layout, If I Fall, I used the title and lyrics to the song of the same name by The Dixie Chicks. This worked great with the fun photo I had of my fiancée and me. The tabs on the side of the photo pull out to reveal full lyrics to the song, and our story.)

Design Ideas

  • At a loss for your next mini album? Grab an empty CD, DVD, or video case and use it as the basis for your album. Decorate the outside, fill it up with hand-cut pages and embellishments, and you’ve got a one-of-a-kind gift idea.

  • Notice the font and typography designs on a favorite movie box. What entices you about the way the lettering is designed and placed? Consider copying this on a layout of your own.

  • Choose a DVD or video from your collection that particularly strikes you. Examine the package design. Are the colors appealing? Is the photography spot-on? Choose one or more elements and create a scrapbook page with a similar design.

(For my layout, Drama Queen, I examined the title, photography, and package design of the popular movie Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. My subject and I had a blast shooting photographs in similar poses, and the result is a fun layout celebrating her many-faceted personality.)

I’ve loved music and movies for as long as I can remember. Now that I’ve learned to harness the creative potential in all of those small packages, I appreciate them even more. So next time you’re stuck, try opening up your entertainment center closet or scan your CD rack. You never know when the perfect layout might strike you.
