Using Other Crafts on Your Layouts

For many scrapbookers, crafting is a way of life, and it's not just limited to paper crafting. I've enjoyed crafts like cross-stitch and plastic canvas for years, and added knitting to my repertoire last year. Recently, though, I thought it might be fun to incorporate some of these other crafty skills with my first love, scrapbooking. That's where the idea for two of my recent layouts came from. In my "Riley 2011" page, I did a simple cross-stitch design on regular cross-stitch fabric (Aida Cloth) and back-stitched my title onto the cloth. Then, I inked the edges with Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Evergreen Bough, from the winter collection to give it a little extra pop, and attached it to some cardstock using brads to keep the material from fraying.

In "Baby it's cold outside," meanwhile, I decided to knit a mini-scarf like the one my brother is wearing in the photo. I took up knitting last year and one of my first projects was a scarf for a Christmas present for my brother. I snapped his picture Christmas morning and knew immediately I wanted to scrap it with a mini version of the scarf he's wearing on the layout. Putting the page together was simple. I knitted a scarf long enough to wrap around the photo and attached it with adhesive. Then I used adhesive foam squares to attach the photo to the layout - the squares helped to counteract the added bulk from the scarf - and used mini brads to position the scarf and attach it to the layout.
