Titles from Television
Do you ever get frustrated trying to come up with catchy titles for your layouts? There are plenty of places to get inspiration for titles, but have you ever considered the TV listings? TV shows hire very talented and clever people to write everything about the shows, including their titles. While some of these titles are quite specific (such as Grey's Anatomy), others are more general and can be applied to a variety of situations. Many can be used as is or modified slightly to create a clever and witty layout title. For example, every year we go apple picking. Each year, we do it at the same orchard on a crisp, clear day, we ride the same tractor, and we take photos. Every year I make a layout from our day at the orchard, and I title the layout "Apple Picking." Given that it is stating the obvious and I've used it several times, this title could be described as boring. This year, the highlight of our apple-picking outing was that my older son really enjoyed climbing the trees. While trying to find a title that conveyed tree climbing, rather than just apple picking, I thought about one of my favorite TV shows: "Men in Trees" and modified the title to suit my family, coming up with "Boys in Trees." "Men in Trees" is a relatively new TV show which may or may not go on to have a legacy and be remembered for years to come. If it does, then I have added a cultural reference to my layout; if not, then I still have a title which is much more fun than "Apple Picking." Sometimes the TV titles don't need to be changed at all, such as with Mary Eason's layout "Criminal Minds." Although any TV title could be a candidate, here are some current ones that may be easily adapted to layout titles: - Crime Scene Investigation
- Desperate Housewives
- 20/20
- Without a Trace
- Sex in the City (try changing "sex" into a different word for all sorts of possibilities)
- Pushing Daisies
- Law and Order
- 2 ½ Men
- Numb3rs
Primetime shows aren't the only ones that have clever titles. Even if you don't watch daytime television, some of the shows are so famous that everyone has heard of them. Consider the daytime soaps as sources of titles as well: - As the World Turns
- Days of Our Lives
- All my Children
Don't forget about game shows and reality shows. Although some of these have been on practically forever, and some are very short-lived, these genres offer title possibilities as well: - The Price is Right
- Wheel of Fortune
- Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
- American Idol
- The Amazing Race
- The Bachelor
Classic television shows are those that have stood the test of time, either through their greatness, re-runs, or just plain silliness. Either way, classic TV provides us with many sources of titles, all of which have a cultural reference. - All in the Family
- M*A*S*H (use a word starting with each of these letters)
- Miami Vice
- Three's Company
- Happy Days
- Mission Impossible
- Get Smart
- Family Ties
- Home Improvement
- The Wonder Years
- Married... With Children
- Mad about You
- The Facts of Life
- Who's the Boss?
Many classic shows are so famous, that things that were said in them are famous too. Consider a famous quote or theme song as a potential layout title: - "Movin' on Up"
- "Live Long and Prosper"
- "Not that there's anything wrong with it"
- "You wanna go where everybody knows your name"
- "Who can turn the world on with her smile?"
What if you need more than a title? Well, some TV shows can provide that too. Consider this for journaling the next time you do a cruise-themed layout: "Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, A tale of a fateful trip That started from this tropic port Aboard this tiny ship. The mate was a mighty sailing man, The skipper brave and sure. Five passengers set sail that day For a three hour tour, a three hour tour."
