Gamer Girl: Scrapbooking Video Games

by Tiffany Roberts (Oct 8, 2007)
I jokingly used to refer to myself as a WOW Widow. What is WOW you may be asking? It stands for World of Warcraft, which is a video game. Not just any video game, mind you. Those in the know refer to it as an MMORPG: Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, and its dedicated players number in the millions. My husband was one of those millions, and many nights I sat here scrapping, and grumbling about this time-consuming hobby of his.

Finally after about a year of watching, my husband convinced me to create a character and try the game myself. Voila... a gamer girl was born!

Do you have a spouse, child, or significant other who is also a "gamer"? Why not create a scrapbook layout or mini book based on computer or video gaming? We feature other hobbies in our scrapbook layouts, so why not this one?

Here are a couple examples to help get those creative juices flowing.

My Alter Ego

This layout is dedicated to my character, commonly referred to as a "toon" in the game. My toon's name is Azurelle. I decided to compare my true self to my online character. This can be done for any type of role-playing game.

A trio of monogram letters for each name is a fun accent - as well as an opportunity to use up leftover alphabet stickers.

Geek Speak

This layout highlights the abbreviations and specific lingo of the game my husband and I enjoy playing together. Many of these abbreviations and terms are universally used in online gaming. You can search the internet for lists of these abbreviations or the meaning of words such as leet, noob, and woot, common terms used when speaking to others in game.

I created 2" x 4" rectangles, folded them, and put the word on the front and the meaning on the inside. This makes my layout more interactive and gave me the opportunity to embellish this non-photo layout with fun accents.

Supplies:

  • cardstock - Bazzill
  • ribbon - Target $1.00 Spot
  • brads - Target $1.00 Spot
  • letters - K&Co
  • font's - Bickly Script and Teamwork
  • misc. embellishments (buttons, brads, letter charms)

WoW-B-Q

My last example is a layout featuring photos of a B-B-Q we held at our house this summer for all of the friends we've made online. When you play an online game you tend to see the same people over and over and you start to form friendships.

I used a label maker to list each person's character name.

If someone in your life enjoys video games of any variety I think it's a great idea to celebrate that hobby with a scrapbook layout. It opens up a chance to have a discussion about something they love, as well as an opportunity for you to show that you are interested in their hobby. These types of layouts are a great excuse to step outside your comfort zone and try something new, and you never know what could happen. I just might bump into you online some night dressed as a gnome and wielding a mighty weapon! If not, we could at least compare layouts at the next crop!
