Inspiration from Board Games

Long before there were reality shows, families gathered around the television to watch their favorite game shows. In the 60's it was Name That Tune, followed by The Dating Game in the 70's and in the 80's, The Gong Show . Even before the invention of the TV, there were board games. Now, with so many distractions, TIVO, game systems, and the Internet, our board games are often found sitting idle in the closet. In this article we will explore how we can use these board games as inspiration for our pages. Does your family have a family game night? I can remember as a child playing board games such as Life, Scrabble, and Yahtzee. These games were not only a source of fun, but also a great memory to record. As I was browsing the Scrapjazz gallery one day, I came across unicorn1's layout. I just love how graphic her page is and how interesting her handwritten journaling about their competitiveness to get the most valuable properties is! The colors and the elements work well together, and let you know exactly what this page was about. ![]() Another way you can get inspiration from board games is to use the elements from the games themselves. Several years ago, my daughter loved to play a game called "Pretty Princess." After looking exhaustively for princess items to fit the theme, and not locating any, I looked to my Scrabble tiles. In the title, "GAMES PEOPLE PLAY," I used the tiles to spell out the words "GAMES" and "PEOPLE," and it really helped capture the fun look I was after. ![]() So the next time you need a jump-start for your page, look to your board games. The graphics, designs, and elements are a wealth of inspiration that will be sure to help with your layouts. |
