Cultural Influences Can Add Spice to Your Layouts

by Sheredian Vickers (Mar 26, 2007)

I cannot help but think of Cajun cuisine whenever I think of Cajun. Cajun cuisine originates from the French-speaking Acadian or "Cajun" immigrants in the Acadiana region of Louisiana. The zestful dishes are frequently at our family gatherings, and as such have been the subject of several layouts. It was a provocative challenge to create layouts specifically with the Cajun culture in mind.

The crawfish boil is a celebratory event where Cajuns boil crawfish, potatoes, onions and corn in large cookers. Oftentimes shrimp and crabs serve as a substitute for crawfish. Either way, a crawfish boil or shrimp boil means fun and good food with friends and family. In the layout, "Shrimp Boil," the spicy colors of the shrimp and corn make for a page reminiscent of the merriment of a Cajun affair.

Nothing says good times better than color on a layout. "Laissez Le Bon Temps Rouler" is another layout that draws influence from the Cajun lifestyle. The colors are a mainstay in the Cajun culture, and coordinated well to make a Christmas layout with non-traditional holiday colors. The title, "Laissez Le Bon Temps Rouler," is the famed Louisiana motto which means "let the good times roll."

Look around you and draw from various cultures when you're doing your next scrapbook project. Take a color, a theme, or a festive event and see how your layout can come to life with a fresh look. Go ahead, I challenge you to laissez le bon temps rouler.
