Kids’ Clothes for Less: Keeping Them Stylish while Maintaining Your Budget

by Vistaprint (Feb 28, 2013)

Kids are expensive, totally worth it, but expensive. One of the big costs of having growing kids is clothing. While you might be able to wear a shirt for several years, your children get bigger and outgrow their clothing, often before it's even close to being worn out. On top of that, once kids reach a certain age they often want to keep up with their peers in the wardrobe department. So what can cash-strapped parents do to meet their growing kids' clothing needs and wants?  There are plenty of things actually; you just have to adjust your shopping routines a little (and you don't even have to rifle through clothing racks at the thrift store). Here are some places to look for great deals on kids' clothes:

Auction sites: Online auction sites like Ebay are great for finding some amazing deals on kids' clothing. Kids' clothes are often gently used and sometimes not used at all when a child grows out of an item before he/she gets a chance to wear it. If your child is desperately seeking a certain item, then checking the bigger auction sites first is a great idea. There's a good chance you'll find what they're looking for and can get it for less than the price in stores. Plus, there is a lot of selection for kids' clothes on these kinds of sites because parents want to clear out outgrown sizes to make way for their children's current clothes. Once you get familiar with how the sites work, you may also want to sell some of your too-small items and make some extra money to spend on the new stuff.

Online print shops: If your kids love logo t-shirts and hoodies, then looking to an online printing site like Vistaprint Deals can save you a lot of money and allow kids to have a hand in designing their own clothing. Kids can choose from pre-made designs or upload catch-phrases and designs of their own. If you have a child who's a budding artist then they may want to use some of their own artwork for the shirt designs.

Clothing exchanges: Have a look both online on sites like Facebook and around your local community for clothing swaps. Check local newspapers and magazines for news of clothing exchanges going on in your area. If you're ambitious you can even organize one yourself. Don't worry if you can't find one you can physically go to. You can easily search out kids clothing swaps online. The swap option works particularly well for parents of babies and toddlers because the clothes are usually so lightly used that they still have a lot of life left in them and the young kids aren't yet picky about what they wear.

Local online marketing sites: Another money-saving alternative is to search your area's online marketing sites, like Craigslist. Navigate your way to the ‘for sale' section and choose the ‘clothing and accessories' option. A lot of people list children's clothing that they want to get rid of - sometimes even for free.

With a little creative thinking you can keep your kids happy and keep clothing costs low. You may even be able to do it without ever setting foot in the mall. Now that's an added bonus!
