Milestones

by Jane Swanson (Apr 1, 2006)

When traveling on the interstate with friends in other cars, we use our cell phones to ask what mile marker has just been passed. This helps us know how far ahead or behind we are from one another and how long it will take to catch up. Sometimes, the mile marker confirms how hilariously far apart we are or seriously informs us that we've missed a turn or two. Often, the mile marker shows that we are right on track but there are still "miles to go before we sleep."

There are milestones that show the passage of time and cause us to reflect on life's fleeting moments. We can approach these mile markers in our journey with laughter or sorrow, depending on whether we are "right on track" or we've "missed a turn or two." Milestone moments can be preserved through our scrapbooking and help us record the emotions produced by these transitional times.

For most adults, the first milestone birthday occurs at age 30. Marriage, children, careers and new homes are often the subjects of our scrapbooks during these days. These milestones usually produce much celebration and little melancholy reflection, though there are moments in this season of life that we do not want to see end and that can cause some sadness. The second milestone birthday strikes at age 50 and the celebration often includes black balloons and "over the hill" messages. While funny at age 30, these embellishments require a certain sense of humor in later life.

The 25th wedding anniversary is another occasion to record one's thoughts on fond memories from the past but there are still roads to be traveled and we must set out to discover what's behind the next bend in the road. Grandchildren bring a newly paved surface to our worn roads and the adventure of life continues. Retirement parties and 50th wedding anniversaries top the list for milestones to record in later life. The "toasts" and "roasts" of these types of events deserve a special page in our memory books.

The impact of milestones is that they point out for us where we've been and where we're going and if we need to make some adjustments to the road map we've been following. They point out that life continues on, even if we don't want it to. We can freeze those amazing moments in our scrapbooks, but once the book is closed we have to keep moving on to the next milestone. All the holidays, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and new babies make the next milestone an event to cherish and record. After all, there are "miles to go before we sleep."
