Birthday Layouts: One Sketch, One Collection, Three Layouts

by Amy Sotolongo (Jan 17, 2013)

I am not typically an events scrapper, but I took this assignment in order to challenge myself to scrap my nephew's first birthday photos. I enlisted the help of Kristine Davidson from Creative Scrappers since she is a fantastic sketch artist. I was thrilled when she emailed me this sketch:

The banners screamed birthday and the layers called to my Cakewalk papers and embellishments by October Afternoon.

Layout #1: Happy Days

I took this sketch and created this layout:

I love using sketches as a jumping off point, and then adding my own personal touches. For this layout I used the Cakewalk papers and embellishments to showcase my photos. I wanted to include the number ‘one' on the layout, and decided to put the letters down the middle to define the number. I also used the star embellishments to create a visual triangle within the layout.

Techniques used:

  • Layering
  • Creating a visual triangle
  • Using buttons
  • Using pieces of patterned papers as embellishments
  • Using an electronic cutter

Layout #2: Birthday Boy

This is an example of a simple layout using simple techniques.

I wanted the focal point to be my photo, so I used the Cakewalk patterned paper to showcase and draw the eye to photo.

I also created a visual triangle using the round embellishments.

Layout #3: XoXo

This is another example of a layout that is simple in nature and focuses on the photo. I used my scraps of patterned paper to create a background pattern. The "Xo" background contributes to the journaling and also allows for a linear place to journal. I framed the photo to draw the eye in and added the label to the photo to allow for the date.

Techniques Used:

  • Creating a background using electronic cut shapes/titles
  • Framing a photo to draw the eye in
  • Framing a layout to draw the eye in
  • Journaling between die cuts
  • Using scraps to create a layout

Do you have birthday photos in your stack of "to be scrapbooked" pile? I challenge you to use the sketch provided above to create at least one layout documenting a birthday. Once finished, come back and link up a photo so we can all see what you created.
