Treasuring Your Favorites
Favorite things bring a smile to your face and become a frequent topic of conversation among friends. Why is it that talking about our favorite things makes us smile? Perhaps it’s because these are the things that comfort us and bring us joy. Your favorite things reflect your personality. When getting to know someone, we talk about favorite things like foods, colors, music, books, and movies. Talking about your favorites is a great way to find common ground with someone and to develop friendships. When I was in junior high school, my classmates passed around a notebook where everyone would share their favorite things. There was a separate page for favorite food, favorite movie, favorite band, favorite color, and the list went on. It was fun to share our favorites with one another. Why not include some layouts about favorite things in your scrapbook albums? Following are various types of layouts highlighting favorites that you can create: Create layouts that reflect your personal favorites. Creating a layout about your favorite things is important. By doing so, you are documenting an aspect of your personality that will be treasured for generations to come. Are you an avid reader or do you love to quilt? Is blue your favorite color? Do you drink coffee or is hot cocoa your beverage of choice? What are the little things that bring you comfort? Do you like candles? Do you have a favorite scent? Document these things in a layout about you and share it with those that you love. How incredible would it be to have a keepsake that details your grandmother or great grandmother’s favorite things? Creating a layout about your favorites is an artistic way for you to celebrate what makes you happy. Create layouts that reflect your child’s favorites. Our favorite things entertain us. When my son was a toddler, we would keep him entertained on long car trips by having him look at a little album that was filled with photos of his favorite people. You could create an album for a young child and even make it in an ABC theme filled with photos of his favorite people and things. Creating an annual layout about your child’s favorite things can be an ideal way to document his changing interests as he gets older. A list of your child’s favorite things can convey a lot about his personality. Is he an artist? Is he an athlete? Is he outgoing? Is he shy? What about your child’s favorite foods at different ages? Can you imagine how wonderful it would be to have that kind of information from your own childhood? I remember things I liked at different ages as a child, but certainly not everything. Our preferences at a certain time in our life are also a reflection of what pop culture was like at that particular time. What was hip or “in” may have influenced our choices. It is fun to look back at these things and can be an interesting way for future generations to see what things were like during a certain time. Remember the “100 Things I Love” layouts that were all the craze not so long ago? Well, that is just one way to create a favorites layout. I think most people jump to the conclusion that a “favorites” layout has to focus on material things. Actually, the possibilities are endless. You can create layouts that reflect your favorite things about a particular person or your favorite moments from a specific time in your life. In these instances, think of your favorites as things that you don’t want to forget and that you would like future generations to discover about you or someone special in your life. Create layouts about favorite moments in time.
I created a layout about my favorite childhood memories. There are certain memories from my childhood that are so special I wanted to document them in a layout so that one day my child can have a glimpse of what my childhood was like. I don’t want to forget all the times my sister and I would argue because she wanted to wear my new shoes. I always want to remember how excited I was to wear a special new dress to church on Easter morning and the countless times my brother and I would look through the Sears toy catalog making our Christmas wish lists. Creating a layout capturing these memories is a wonderful way to share your childhood or other special occasions with your loved ones. Create layouts that reflect your favorite things about a special person. I created another layout that focuses on my son’s favorite things about his father. I asked him to tell me what he likes about his Daddy and then I included these things on the layout. I used buttons and other small accents to represent his favorite things. I felt it was important to document what he likes most about his father at this age. Creating a layout that documents your favorite things about someone can be a great way to highlight a special relationship. I challenge you to take some time to create some layouts about favorite things for you and your family. Here is a list to help you get started: Favorite childhood memories Favorite dreams Favorite birthdays Favorite holidays Favorite moments Favorite seasons Favorite quotes Favorite lessons learned Favorite things about your children Favorite books Favorite movies Favorite things about being pregnant Favorite dates with your spouse Favorite sports Favorite day of the year Whether you choose to document your favorite material things, your favorite things about another person, or favorite memories, I guarantee that you will be creating layouts that will be treasured by generations to come.
