Scrapbooking Your Workplace

by Allyson Bright Meyer (Sep 29, 2009)

Work. Many of us spend at least 40 hours a week at it, yet it rarely ends up in our scrapbooks. So often, it's easy to think that work "doesn't matter" or that it's simply a means to an end. Not so! Your work says a lot about you as a person, and it's an important part of telling your story.

Do you spend your days in a cubicle behind a computer? Doing heavy lifting? Chasing kids around the yard? No matter how you spend your working hours, they are worth scrapbooking. After years of trying out different jobs, I finally found one that I truly and totally love. I may spend five days a week in a cube, but I enjoy the work I do and have made friendships that I really treasure.

I recently created this layout about my current job as part of an "all about me" project I'm working on. I love the result. It details the way I spend my day, and why that's so important to me.

Of course, don't feel limited to scrapbooking about your current job. A couple of years ago, I was faced with the difficult decision to quit working in childcare. It was a really hard time for me, as I truly loved that work. More than a year later, I created this page to share how I was feeling about it, and express the love I have for the kids I had the chance to teach.

It wasn't the easiest page to create, because my journaling is very personal. But the end result says a lot about me, and I'm glad I included it in my scrapbooks.

Why not try creating a scrapbook page or two about what your job means to you? Need help getting started? Try one of these prompts:

  • What was your first job?
  • Where are you working now? Why do you (or don't you) enjoy it?
  • Have you ever made the choice to give up a job? Was it a hard decision?
  • Who are the people you work with? Are they close friends?
  • Do you commute to work? Or is it close to home? (Or even at home?)
  • Describe your office environment.

Don't forget to look for workplace memorabilia to include on your pages. Business cards are a great touch!

Once you get started, you'll find there are a variety of ways to commemorate your time at the office, wherever it may be. For many people, work is more than just a way to spend your day. It's a choice. It's a lifestyle. It's a commitment. When you leave your workplace out of your scrapbooks, you're missing the chance to share a part of who you are. So take some time to tell your story. Trust me, you won't regret it.
