Versatile Vellum

by Andrea Steed (Mar 31, 2004)

Vellum is one of the most versatile papers available in scrapbooking. It can be used for so many things. Whether you print your journaling on it, create a window pane for a paper piecing, or use it simply to soften the colors of a bright patterned paper, vellum can be a wonderful design piece for scrapbook pages.

Vellum comes in all sorts of patterns, colors, sizes and weights. The greatest feature of using vellum is being able to see through it-how much you see will depend on the weight. Depending on the weight of the vellum you are using, the translucency will vary. The lighter-weight the paper is, the more translucent it will be. Heavier vellum will be more opaque.

Some ways to use vellum:

  • Lay a piece of vellum over a photo with a small portion of it cut out. This will soften the majority of the photo, while leaving an opening to focus on the important part of the photo.

  • Add journaling to your page where you want the background paper to show through, but cannot run the paper through your printer. 12 x 12 scrapbookers find vellum particularly helpful since most people do not have a printer that can print on 12 x 12 paper.

  • When creating paper piecings, use vellum to represent clear or translucent materials, such as clouds, bubbles or glass.

  • Lay a piece of vellum over bright or busy patterned paper to soften the pattern.

  • Create vellum pockets for tags or envelopes for journaling.

  • Print the photos themselves on vellum to give them a soft, translucent look.

Printing on Vellum

Most vellum can be printed on with an inkjet printer, just as you would print on any type of paper. However, some vellum has a waxy finish and may need to be sanded slightly before printing on it. Sanding the finish will help the ink to stick to the paper, rather than bubble up on top of the paper or smear easily. You can also use non-smearing pens such as the Slick Writer brand to trace or write on vellum.

Vellum Adhesives

Finding the perfect vellum adhesive is a mission for many scrapbookers. Some adhesives that I've found to work fairly well are:

  • Scotch Vellum Adhesive

  • A spray adhesive

  • A Xyron machine

  • Brads

  • Eyelets

  • Stitching

What else can you do with vellum?

Tear it, chalk it, fold it, crumple it, ink it, stamp it, and draw on it! Vellum can be used just like any other type of paper, but the results will give you a completely new look!
