Creative Letter and Word Replacement

by Denise Gormish (Feb 4, 2009)

Are you looking for a creative way to spruce up a title? One way is to change the title by adding images to it. Instead of using letters for the entire title, letters and words can be replaced by images. Here are a few examples.

Use an Image in Place of a Letter. Find an image that is the approximate size and shape of a letter. For example, many round objects look like the letter "O." In my title "Soccer" I used the circular soccer ball for the "O" in the word "Soccer."

In another title I replaced the last letter, an "l" in the word "School," with a vertical image of a pencil.

Use an Image for an Entire Word. An entire word can be replaced by an image that means or represents that word. My daughter loves horses so I used a heart to represent her love for horses.

In another layout, I used the image for its actual name. I wanted my title to be "Soccer Star" so I used a star for the word "Star."

Use a Homophone. A homophone is a word that is pronounced the same as another word but has a different meaning. It may be spelled the same or differently. For a baseball layout titled "Next at Bat" I used the image of the animal bat instead of a baseball bat.

Use Images to Create a Letter. Images can be placed in an orientation so that multiple images or pieces of an image make the shape of a letter. In a fall layout, I used images of fall leaves to create the shape of the letter "C" in "Counting the Days."

Get creative with images and words on your next layout. Mix and match them to create unique titles.
