Attention-Grabbing Titles
Every layout needs a title. A title gives an instant impression and some quick information about the layout. It draws the viewer into the layout. For maximum impact, create a title that will instantly grab the viewer's attention. Several techniques can be used for attention-grabbing titles. Here are a few of those techniques: Size. A quick technique for an attention-grabbing title is to make the title large. On layouts that have room for a large title, use that space. Large titles can be created from computer fonts, large or jumbo stickers, rub-ons, or chipboard. In my layout, "Down by the Bay," I used large stickers and spread the title across two pages for maximum impact. Notice there's still plenty of room for photographs and embellishments. Location. A variety of locations can spotlight a title. Keeping the rule of thirds in mind, put your title in one of the hot spot locations on your layout. Another eye-catching spot is the center of the layout. In my layout, "Weed Whacker," I centered the title a third of the way down the page. Alternatively, a title can have impact by being set apart from the rest of the layout. In my layout, "Turn Off the TV," I mounted the jumbo stickers on a strip of paper that went the entire width of the page. Depth. Give a title interest and attention by giving it depth. Use foam, chipboard or felt to lift the title off the page. In my layout, "New Eggs," the title is lifted with foam lettering. In my layout, "Spring," the chipboard letters give depth and attention to the title. White Space. While we tend to cram layouts with photographs, embellishments and text, a layout can really shine by using white space. White space, an area of a layout without text or embellishments, can bring attention to a title. Create a title but leave it uncluttered. In my layout, "Bumpass Hell," I added a title but left the area around the title clear of anything else. The result is that the white space draws the eye to it. Notice that white space doesn't always have to be white. The background can be any color, such as the blue background in my layout, "Summer Swim." Color. Using more than one color on a title can bring attention to it. The colors can be different for each word or for each letter. In my layout, "Bobbin Lacing," I used two colors to add interest and attention to the title. Contrasting Sizes. Although a large title can be attention-grabbing, a title with multiple sizes can work as well. Consider making one word large and one small. Alternatively make the first letter in the title larger and the rest of the title small, or accent one word with large letters. In my layout, "Easter Egg Search," I used contrasting sizes. Embellished Titles. Placing an embellishment beside a title can bring attention to the title. Consider flowers, flourishes, shapes, punches, mini tags, etc. as embellishments for a title. In my layout, "Café," I used flowers and flourishes to highlight the title. Make an immediate impact with your title on your next layout. Chose one of these techniques - either a new one or one you've used before - and create an attention-grabbing title.
