Sticker Borders: Adding Chalks and Pop Dots
Are you like me? Do you have a ton of stickers and other embellishments but are not sure how to make them 'current'? I bought tons of stickers years ago and am still using up that stash! I love the speed of stickers. But I also love the dimension and texture of today's 3-d embellishments. I don't want to reinvest tons of money in my stash and just dump the flat stickers I already have. What to do? I put on my thinking cap recently and came up with a fun way to incorporate my stash of stickers into accents, borders and card making without dropping another handful of cold cash. How? CHALKS! You see, I already had chalks and I already had stickers. You probably do too. Combining the two made for easy fast borders in any color combo I needed in almost any theme! Here are the basics for how I get from a sticker sheet to a very nicely coordinated 3-d border or accent using chalks and pop dots.
The Background: First I decide if this accent is for a scrapbook page or a card. This helps me set the size of the background up on my white paper. Cards are usually 4.25” x 5.5” blocks and borders are usually 2” or 3” high x 12” inches wide for a 12” x 12” page. I usually use white for my base but any light or dark paper will work as long as you choose chalks that will show up on the surface. Cut or draw the boundaries of the border with a pen. You can also use sticker borders, paper strips, or torn edges to delineate the boundaries of the border and where to stop chalking. Theme and Colors: Decide the theme of the accent and the colors that already exist in your sticker set. For the 'Be Thankful' block I chose fall colors of yellow, orange-red, green, and gray. (See figure 3) For the Snow globe border, I went with icy to dark blues, lavender blues and gray. (See figure 1) Get your chalks out and be sure you have enough applicators for the various colors. I use makeup sponges for large surfaces like this. I get more even coverage in less time and no unwanted streaks. Blow off any unwanted chalk dust or wipe lightly with a dry facial tissue. No fixative is needed. Chalk the background with more than one shade of chalk. This is what gives the plain paper a deep, rich textured look...for pennies. It also ties the colors of the background into the colors of the sticker set you are using. You can coordinate any sticker sheet to a page without having to shop endlessly. You get a harmonious page accent for almost free! Layer on the Stickers: Now add your stickers where you planned them on the border or accent. They will stick down right over the chalked area. If you have duplicate stickers, add a pop dot underneath a few stickers and layer them right over the matching stickers. This will give you a 3-d effect. Don't pop dot every one of the stickers. You want to get a random and dimensional look to the border. If your duplicate sticker is flopping and sticking down, you can also make the back of the duplicate non-sticky by chalking the backside. Do this before adding the pop dot if your sticker is large. To coordinate the rest of the page, you can also chalk the 4 corners of the background page or chalk your photo mats. Sticker letter titles or pen writing also look great laid down on a chalk-smudged area. This is a great way to use up your varied sticker letters in the same title but have it still look good and coordinate. On my Snow Babies layout I used black pen and also drew swirls with a white Galaxy paint marker and then chalked around it in blue. The swirled white pen line then resisted my next step of adding blue chalk on my green background. This created a nice windblown look for the snow theme. Card Making:
If you love to use sticker leftovers and make greeting cards, this technique is perfect for you! It only takes one or two colors of chalk and one nice leftover sticker to make a greeting card you can be proud of! For variety, you can even chalk inside a square punchout before you add the sticker. This will define the accent area and create a built in edge around the card. Have fun! Dig out some of those chalks and stickers today. Add a few pop dots, a couple of pen swirls, and away you go! Your creativity is endless. And you did it for little or nothing using what you already own! Just start combining and see what you come up with today!
