Fabulous Foam Stamp Techniques
How did it happen? - Something that we used in its most remedial form at Girl Scouts to decorate paper bags has become a sophisticated staple item on our scrapbooking tables. Fortunately, Foam Stamps have evolved since our Brownie days and now come in enough shapes and sizes to keep even the most savvy scrapbooker happy (admit it – you’re a hoarder. I’ll be the first to raise my hand). The creative opportunities vary about as widely as the choices on the store shelf. Here are a few of my favorite techniques using stamps from Li’l Davis Designs!
Pen Outline – Get your Sharpie ready! I can’t seem to stamp an image without outlining anymore. Whether you draw along the edge or just along the inside to create a border, you won’t be able to leave your letters “naked” anymore. Try different colors of pens and different widths. Or, better yet, use a thin paintbrush and a coordinating color of paint to add the outline.
Stamped Outline – Love this one! Take any foam stamp shape or letter and line the edges ONLY with paint. Use your finger for better control. Stamp the image onto your paper to get only the outlined impression. This works great on pattern paper when you want to frame a word or an image. Looking for the easy way out? Pick up one of Li’l Davis’ new outline stamps (two fonts to choose from). We did the work for you!
Altering Your Stamps – Ever thought about investing in a second set of your favorite letter font? With Li’l Davis prices now between $6.99 and $8.99 per set you can afford to. Here are two reasons why you should: 1.) You can scrape up your stamps with a craft knife (start with the edges and then add “worm” holes to the center) for a grungy look or 2). Cut patterns or shapes into the foam, such as pin-stripes or wide stripes.
Alternatives to Paint – We all love paint, but it’s not the only option when adding color to your stamps. Try using a brush marker with small letter fonts. Li’l Davis had 3 new small fonts to join the popular “Bonnymeade” font. Watercolors and Dye Based Ink also work for a more subtle effect. My new favorite medium to stamp with is Diamond Glaze. I love adding fine glitter to the stamped image. In this layout, the "t,a, and y" were all stamped with diamond glaze and then coated with clear glitter.
What are you still doing sitting here? Run, don’t walk, to your table, closet or studio – wherever you create – and get started now!
