A Greeting Card with a Perfect Pocket

by Gwyn Calvetti (May 3, 2006)

Though we like to give personalized handmade gifts, there are times when cold hard cash or a Target gift card are the best choice---think about all those hard-to-shop-for graduates. Never fear. You can still provide a personal touch to that crisp bill or gift card with a handmade card, specially designed to hold your offering.

Simple Approaches

There are a number of creative ways a pocket could be incorporated into a card design. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking.

  • Decorated library pocket placed inside cover flap.
  • Slider placed between the front and inside cover. (Depending on the design of your card, you could incorporate a cut-out into the front that allows the gift to be part of the design. George with a crown, for example!)
  • Accordion-style foldout, with greeting on front, gift tucked into next flap.

A Fast Buck!

With all the graduations, weddings and other events fast approaching, chances are you want something fun but easy to create, possibly in multiples. Here's a versatile card design that will present your gift attractively.

You'll need the following basic supplies to make this card. Personalize it with extras from your stash.

  • Cardstock cut and scored to fold into card of size you desire
  • Matching cardstock to add the pocket element
  • Presentation envelope
  • Letter stamps, rub-ons, die cut letters or even your own hand lettering
  • Miscellaneous patterned papers and embellishments of choice

Decorate your card front as desired. This design has layered mats topped with patterned paper. The one pictured used QuicKutz letters for the greeting, but any lettering tools will work.

Measure and cut a second piece of cardstock to fit the inside panel of your card. Using a bone folder, crease a ¼" fold on the bottom edge. Using the adhesive of your choice, adhere this fold along the bottom inside edge of your card. The resulting flap will be slightly smaller than the base panel as a result of the folded and glued edge.

You may wish to add decorative tabs, ribbons or even a cut-out on your panel to draw attention to the gift underneath. Instead of a fold-out flap, you may want to cut the cardstock piece ¼" wider on the sides, creating folds and adhering along the edges to create a true pocket. This is a simple yet infinitely variable design to create a special touch for your next present of money or gift card, no matter what the occasion!
